Hello! Welcome to the Wema Children's Centre Bakery fund. The Wema Children's Centre is an orphanage in Bukembe, Kenya that houses 246 orphans affected by the AIDS epedemic and war, in addition to educating around 400 in the area at their adjoining Highway Academy. The Centre is run and partially funded by Teresa Wati and Stephen Juma, two hard-working residents of Bukembe. However, they need YOUR help in creating a source of recurring income to fund the expansion of the Centre and create a viable solution to their sustainability.
That is where Students for Wema comes in. Our student organization, in partnership with Texas Enactus, is working to raise the funds necessary to build a micro-enterprise bakery at the Centre that will serve as a profit center, as well as a source of income for graduates of the Centre who have not found employment.
In addition to earning an income, workers will develop valuable business skills that can lead to future employment or entepreunership. Their income will enable them to continue their education at a tertiary school if they choose. The bakery itself will provide a needed good at low costs to the 5,000 villagers of Bukembe, Kenya.
The Wema Children's Centre Bakery will touch thousands of lives in Kenya, but will also provide the oppurtunity for students in the USA to act as mentors, instructors, and pen pals to the Wema children. We plan to create business curriculum for the Centre to be taught through our on the ground partner university, and pilot it in middle schools around Austin ISD, enhancing local children's knowelege.
Please join us in having a head for business, but a mind for the world in donating to the Wema bakery. All proceeds will go towards the building and stocking of the enterprise. Donations of $25 or more are recommended, but every penny counts!
