Turks & Caicos Hurricane Relief

$37,250 of $35,000 goal

Raised by 97 people in 20 months
Turks and Caicos was hit hard by Hurricane Irma. Many people lost everything they've worked so hard for. The country's main source of income is tourism...why? Because of the beauty by nature, the turquoise waters, the marine life and most of all, the people.

The storm hit all of our islands and made shambles of many homes and many lives. All of these lives make a vacation the best it can be. The people of the Turks and Caicos Islands are genuine, have the best hearts and want to please everyone. They're all amazing.

If you've visited these awesome islands, they need your help now. They need things like water, tarps, construction supplies, roofing material, money to rebuild the life that they had, just better and stronger.

We're Janine Popick and John Hingley and we bought a house here 2 years ago because we just fell in love with the people and the environment. Six months ago we loved itso much we sold our spot in California to move to the best place in the world. If you've been there you know what we mean.

We will match 1 for 1 up to $10,000 so please give all you can! And if you are rich friends of ours you better come up with some $$ or we'll call you out ;-)

Seriously, we need these funds asap as Irma has passed and Maria is coming this week.

We will be purchasing tarps in bulk, plastic ties, stainless steel screws and nails, hammers, tools, netting, flashlights, batteries and other necessary items. We will be donating them to Red Cross and the Turks and Caicos catholic church.

Please see it in your hearts to give what you can. John and I will be purchasing what we know the people of the islands need and assure that 100% gets to the people that need it the most.

Please do your best, they are relying on you and so are we!

Woo Hoo! We just raised FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS from an awesome friend who prefers to remain anonymous. That puts us at $37,500, we have now surpassed our (increased from $25,000) goal of $35,000. Help us blow it out to $40,000! Every buck counts and the islands are still in need.

It’s really amazing to see the island coming together, whether it’s repairs to schools & churches, small businesses or the resorts. Everyone is rushing to complete their repairs, and in many cases improvements, in time for peak tourist season. All of this is helping get the economy back in gear and families functioning again!

As you know our second big materials delivery was for 125 more pieces of plywood and 100 rolls of ‘peel & stick’ an adhesive roofing material that applies over the plywood to create a watertight seal. 100 rolls of this compared to a grand total of 625 pieces of plywood may sound a little out of whack, but 100 rolls covers almost 20,000 square feet and 625 pieces of 4’ x 8’ plywood covers about 20,000 square feet too.

The distribution is underway, we actually drove past a truck hauling a bunch of materials on Tuesday, and it happened to be THE actual truck that was transporting some of the plywood and peel & stick you donated to several schools here. Sometimes it takes a week or so to get info back on exactly which schools and churches received the materials, but we know for sure that the Example of Christ Ministry, the Rock of Jesus Ministry and the Community Fellowship Ministry & School were among the grateful recipients.

When we get more pictures we'll share them with you. We thank you so much for your donations, it has really helped the great people of Turks and Caicos.

Oh yeah, we're inching closer to our goal of $35,000! We’re at $32,150 now. Big thanks to all of you, to Island Bargains for getting the shipments in for us and thanks to Captain Miller and the Salvation Army for making sure it went to the right places!

Cheers, Janine and John

The plywood you donated has gone to some GREAT use!! The first shipment of wood was used by 3 different schools. These pictures are from the 3 classrooms that were repaired at Enid Capron Primary School. This school was hit pretty hard and as you can imagine getting children back to school is not only necessary for their education, it gets their parents back to work which is much needed for many families in Turks and Caicos.

The second shipment of 125 pieces of plywood and 100 rolls of Peel and Seal have arrived on island and are awaiting to be delivered as well.

When we get pictures of the other schools we'll share them with you. We thank you so much for your donations, it truly helped the people of Turks and Caicos.

We're almost to our goal of $35,000! Thanks to Island Bargains for getting the shipments in for us and thanks to Captain Miller and the Salvation Army for making sure it went to the right places!

Cheers, Janine and John

We got a huge donation ($5000) from a very good friend of ours and we couldn't thank him more!! That's all we'll say, he knows how special we think he is. We're closer than ever to our goal of $35k. Please share! Every $20 helps get us there.

We also got a huge help from Don Stark who founded Turks & Caicos Reef Fund ( http://www.tcreef.org) who helped us big time. Don's organization focuses on the potential for over-fishing, the potential impact of major new commercial developments all present potential threats to the features of these islands that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year - its beautiful beaches, marine animals and reefs. Thanks Don!!

As you know, we got our first shipment of 500 sheets of much needed plywood delivered to our island, and distributed out. So we felt good about placing big order #2! After meeting & working with the awesome folks here on the receiving the initial delivery, we felt they’d have a great feel for what the next batch of rebuilding supplies should be.

We thought we had a good idea too, and ordered a combination of 125 more sheets of plywood (they’ll be needing more plywood here for a long time) and 100 rolls of Peel & Stick, an easy to apply roofing material that goes on top of the plywood to create a watertight seal to keep the rain out. In all that’s 23,500 square feet of coverage! That's a bunch of houses!

And our friends at Island Bargains continue to waive all of their usual fees outside of the actual freight cost that they can’t get a break on.

Once it hits the island we’ll update you on where it’s going and who it’s helping!

Thanks everyone who supported our GoFundMe page that allowed the donation of this plywood to help rebuild Turks & Caicos! As we mentioned, we upped the goal to $35,000 so please share with your friends!
