Webb Street Playground Mural

$4,310 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 60 people in 12 months

I recently bought my first home located next to a playground at Webb, Thompson and Sergeant streets in the Old Richmond/Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. As many of you know, our city is struggling with drugs and poverty, especially in this area of the city where heroin needles and illegal dumping fill the streets and playgrounds, and homelessness is way too commonplace.

People in Philly are struggling and this playground is a picture of that struggle.

It is filled daily with trash from the nearby Wawa, drug needles, cigarette butts and other discarded items that no one would want their child playing next to. The playground equipment is old, rundown, damaged, dirty and even tagged with grafitti. To say it is bleak is an understatement. But we as a community can make a difference by taking action.

I am hoping to do my part to make my neighborhood a healthier, safer, more welcoming, engaged and colorful community environment where kids can safely play and neighbors take pride in their space. To do this, I am partnerning with a local art non-profit called V.U.R.T (Visual Urban Renewal & Transformation) to bring some life back into this play space starting with a rad Philly-centric mural and then moving forward to spruce up the playground in any way we can.

You may know V.U.R.T. as the artists responsible for the awesome SEPTA-token eating squirrel and the Welcome to Fishtown cats murals (Photos above and below by Conrad Benner, Streets Dept.). Their mission is "to inspire, unify, and renew urban communities through the power of public art and revitalization."

I think we can do just that with this new mural, planned for the 2500 block of Thompson Street (right off Aramingo Avenue behind the Wawa and Applebees). It will be the next in their "critter" series and will feature a 2-story raccoon eating an iconic Philly soft pretzel. I hope this art will inspire others and draw attention to potential of this playground as a place for neighborhood kids to be active, engage with others, learn, grow and be inspired to take care of their community as they grow up and not just a place for drug dealers, addicts and homeless people to set up shop.

This first goal of $4,000 will cover the costs of the mural. Your donation will fund the supplies (paint, lift/scaffolding, etc.), insurance and permits necessary to complete it.  Without this money, we will not be able to add this mural to our neighborhood. The goal is to raise the money by mid-September 2017 so the mural can be painted the last week of September.

Once we raise the initial funds, all additional money will go into the park for repainting benches, adding secure trash recepticles and signage and eventually replacing the broken equipment with items that kids will want to play on. I am also seeking corporate/business sponsorships and grant opportunities to make this project happen. Please send me any ideas or contacts.

I am so thankful for your support of our city and my neighborhood. Any amount is appreciated. You have no idea the impact your small donation will make in bringing some spirit back to Old Richmond.SaveSaveSaveSave

We received the new trashcans we ordered for the playground as part of our neighborhood association's Can It program (as well as a starter supply of heavy duty trash bags). The two new cans will be painted live by VURT artists at their event on November 18 raising money and collecting art supplies for local schools. We hope to see you at the event. https://www.facebook.com/events/1952703498305623/

The momentum has slowed down a bit but we are still accepting donations. If you wanted to support this project but have not yet do so, please consider donating now.

Mural Update: Mural is fully funded, and we are looking to nail down a paint day in October and get paperwork for permits taken care of. We will share the date once it is confirmed.

Playground Update: A few neighbors have met to spearhead the work on this playground space. A meeting will be held the Saturday after the mural is complete for all neighbors to come together and meet each other as well as share feedback on how they would like to use the community space and ideas they have for its design. This group will then take the feedback to Parks and Recreation to develop a plan and submit grant applications to cover some of the costs of lighting and rehabbing the space.

All donations received now will go to additional needs for the space including signage, security, trash receptacles and other needs. We are excited to work with ORCA by participating in their CAN IT! Project bringing artist designed trash cans to the neighborhood to address litter. Your donations will go to fund place two or more of these trash cans in and around the playground.

Again, thank you all for your support and encourage you to keep sharing so we can get enough donations to cover our whole list of needs once we get the mural up.
