Show Low Card Player Statue

We are sad to announce that our beautiful “Card Players” statue accidentally caught fire after the conclusion of the beautiful candle light vigil our community had in honor of our fallen Officer Reed.
The statue is the centerpiece to our Show Low Main Street Festival Marketplace Park that is just off the Deuce of Clubs in Downtown Show Low. This statue tells the story of how our small town was named and includes both Clark and Cooley playing that game of cards so long ago.
As the story goes… Show Low had its beginning as a ranch of nearly 100,000 acres jointly owned by Marion Clark and Corydon Cooley, a U.S. army scout. According to legend, sometime around 1876, the partners decided that one of them should leave. They agreed to play cards to decide who would get the ranch. The game they played was believed to have been "seven up," and they played all night with neither of them achieving the winning hand. Finally, Clark is reputed to have said, "Show low, and you take the ranch." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and won the ranch, the cattle, all of the crops, and the buildings. The main street of the town is still called "Deuce of Clubs." Local political lore suggests that if the local election is ever tied, the winner will "draw low" for it.
This statue is the heart of our town and we are saddened at its loss, but are very hopeful that we will replace it with a new and improved statue made of bronze.
Show Low Main Street is a non-profit organization that focuses on the development and beautification of Downtown Show Low. We are hoping to raise $40,000 to put toward the expense of the new statue and hope that you will join us in this endeavor.
