Save the Brooklyn House Restaurant

Two years ago, we made a choice to put everything we had into opening a restaurant that could truly make a difference; a restaurant that served the community in ways that are dynamic and necessary, affordable and considerate.

It is clear to us, given the outpouring of support, that we have succeeded.  But starting a grassroots restaurant from scratch without any financial backing is dicey, and operating a business with sincere ethics is expensive.  It has been a daily struggle that just threw us an unexpected glitch while we were trying to improve the customer experience.

On Sunday, June 7th, we closed for the day to undertake the enormous project of taking out our carpet and refurbishing the original hardwood.  We did this because of the overwhelming requests by our guests to replace the old carpet.  We turned people away all day on Sunday (losing revenues), spent hundreds of dollars on materials, and worked in 95 degree heat for three straight days to sand, polish and clean.  Then, a bucket of linseed oil spontaneously combusted and set our entire front porch on fire.

Now, we are losing more revenues because we cannot open and without local support we don’t know when we will be able to.

Here are our need and what your support will mean to this small, local and sustainable restaurant at each goal we achieve through this fundraising effort:

$  5,000.00 -  reopen the doors of Brooklyn House.

$  9,000.00 – above+ help with the construction to create a warm environment to make your dining experience better

$15,700.00 – above+ replace our outdated and previously owned refrigerator and freezer

$18,700.00 – above+ replace our rotten wooden counters to be replaced with industry standard tables

$25,000.00 – above+ help us replace the old equipment in the kitchen

$32,000.00 – above+ hire a new chef and develop and even more impressive farm to table restaurant for our community

$50,000.00 – all of the above and help us get to a point that we are able to stay open and ensure we can pay back some of our debt to build a long-standing restaurant.

About Brooklyn House:

We are more than a staff of people; we are a family that has developed over the course of 14 years. We have stayed strong for each other through the tough stuff and celebrated with each other through the great stuff. We work together as a cohesive team reaching for a common goal: nourishing our guests, our community and our earth. This restaurant exists to provide a true farm-to-table experience for a fair price so all may enjoy a good meal without breaking the bank.

We are a part of the Brooklyn neighborhood and we are so grateful to have such a strong network of awesome people. Our neighbors have become some of our closest friends and our biggest supporters, and we are ecstatic to offer a comfortable place for our friends to feel at home.

Sustainability has many components often left unnoticed. We are committed to providing a sustainable work environment to ensure that our crew can have full, healthy lives. We are committed to providing sustainable prices and nourishing foods for our guests to ensure that people can come again and again without feeling guilty. We are planning for the future of what we have right now, rather than thinking about what we move on to next.

We understand that everyone does better when EVERYONE does better. We are committed to purchasing what we need from the folks around us, because we truly believe that will make the world around us a better place. We proudly present some of the businesses that are making this possible.
