One week ago life changed in a matter of hours for some very dear friends of mine. They lost everything in the #campfire wildfire along with the rest of their family. The fire roared up the canyon so fast that they were barely able to grab their belongings, toss their pets in the car and escape with their lives. They are temporarily staying in a Church in Biggs, California while they try to figure out a more permanent solution.

 

Tammy and her husband Jonathan have been joined by Tammy’s father Bill who also lost everything in the fire. They are trying to figure out where to go from here, what to do, and what starting over from scratch looks like?  Right now they don’t have many answers.  Mostly, they’ve spent their days making sure that the people they care about are okay,  and getting their basic needs met.

 

Now, they need to focus on finding semi permanent or long term housing somewhere, as Paradise will be uninhabitable for a very long time!  They need to shift their focus to finding a new normal. They were not homeowners and had no rental insurance.  Also, Jonathan is out of work because there is no longer a town to go back to.

 

There is some urgency to their situation because of pre-existing health conditions. Tammy is has an autoimmune condition which makes living in these conditions more dangerous, because she will get ill faster than those with a healthy immune system. Bill also has a health condition, he has COPD. Because of this it is urgent that they get away from the toxic smoke from Paradise burning as soon as possible.
