War and Peace - Grant’s Art and Music Festival NZ

Donation protected
My name is Sherry Grant. I am a pianist and cellist from Auckland, New Zealand.

Currently I am organising a new arts and music festival in Auckland and Wellington that will take place on 23rd - 31st May 2019, aimed at bringing together many art forms and presenting music that is a collaboration between international and NZ musicians.

The title is “War and Peace”, as this event is created to commemorate the peace after the end of WWI a hundred years ago. In both cities the festival will open with a viola recital performed by guest artist Milan Milisavljević, Principal Viola with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from New York City and myself on the piano. The repertoire will feature two viola sonatas composed in 1919 by Rebecca Clarke and Paul Hindemith, and other shorter pieces including a newly commissioned NZ work by the award-winning composer Chris Artley.

In adjacent halls there will be the art exhibitions, with a combination of visual arts, sculptures, photography and poems by mostly NZ artists, all inspired by “War and Peace”. On display there will also be the winning student artworks from the arts competition I am running for NZ high school students to get the younger generation involved.

After the opening nights, the art exhibitions will be moved to different venues and continue for a week in both cities. During the week-long Auckland exhibition, various artists will take turns making artworks onsite during which visitors can observe them up close and ask questions.

There will also be a few added on evening concerts played by the local professional classical musicians and myself, including a concert played by Chinese traditional instruments, a woodwind concert, and an art song concert, all with repertoire inspired by War and Peace. I wish to promote peace and bring different cultures together through art and music.

It is my belief that arts and music will help bring us all closer together because they are one common language that will make our world into one without border.

With your generous support, this festival will be made possible and perhaps will inspire many more to come, both in New Zealand and globally!
