The mission of the Walter S. Herrick, Sr. Memorial Fund is providing tennis lessons for kids at the Crystal Lake, IL Racket Club. This gofundme page seeks to raise money for this purpose.
The Racket Club was founded by my dad, Walt Herrick, Sr., in 1972 as a place to play tennis in McHenry County, Illinois during its cold winter months. It started as an indoor club with four indoor courts. It is now owned by the Crystal Lake Park District and has nine indoor courts and seven outdoor courts.
Upon his passing in 2007, his good friend, tennis double partner, and business partner in the Racket Club enterprise, Jack Thomas, founded the Walter S. Herrick, Sr. Memorial Fund to honor my dad’s contribution to tennis in northern Illinois. The purpose of the Fund is to help local kids learn tennis at the Racket Club Walt founded.
Each year the Fund awards thousands of dollars in the form of tennis lesson scholarships to kids in our community based on their financial need, attitude, dedication to the sport, sportsmanship, academics and volunteerism. Awards are granted based on a formal application by each child and his/her parents. The applications are voted upon by an impartial Selection Committee.
My dad and mom raised six kids in Crystal Lake all of which played tennis at different degrees of proficiency ranging from recreational players to college level players. Dad and his partner Jack Thomas were big believers in the value of participation in the sport of tennis whether it be “just for fun” or on a more competitive basis. They knew the “sport for a lifetime” was just that and would benefit individuals far after their junior tennis days were over.
