Just $10 can provide a Walnut Creek senior with access to transportation. From doctors’ appointments to grocery shopping to social outings, you can give seniors a lift by donating today!
Since 1973, Walnut Creek Recreation has offered a Senior Mini Bus program that provides over 3,000 rides per year to Walnut Creek Seniors who are unable to drive from Monday through Friday, 8:45am to 3:45pm. The Mini Bus operates through the generosity of volunteer drivers (some of whom are pictured above!) and is a crucial transportation option for seniors on a fixed income that helps combat isolation, ensures access to preventative medical care, and supports health and wellness.
In July 2018, Recreation launched a pilot program with Lyft to expand the number of rides and operating hours for seniors. Lyft rides within the city are available, free of charge, on nights, weekends, holidays or when the Mini Bus ride schedule is at capacity. As a result, seniors are able to get where they need to go 24/7!
The response to the Lyft pilot program has been tremendous. The program is on track to double the number of rides Walnut Creek Recreation can provide to seniors each year, for a total of over 6,000 rides between the Mini Bus and Lyft. Initial funding for the pilot program was provided by a local transportation grant, but demand for rides far outweighs available funds.
The impact of the expanded transportation program is tremendous. Bess, age 95, expresses:
"My son and daughter-in-law are so busy working, I can't ask them for rides. Lyft really gave me a new "lift" in life at my age. Now I can go to doctor's appointments, and I can attend activities I couldn't go to before, like lunch and movies [at the Civic Park Community Center]. I also get to meet new people. It's amazing!"
