Donate Water to East Chicago

You may be familiar with what’s happening to the water in Flint, Michigan, but the residents of the Calumet neighborhood in East Chicago, Indiana aren't faring much better. Their soil and water contain lead levels hundreds of times above what the EPA deems safe.  Officials have said up to 90 percent of the water lines in East Chicago could be lead.  The poisoning of the soil in East Chicago is tied to the Region's petroleum industry.

On Saturday, May 12, 2017, we will be walking the path of the tar sands pipeline from Hammond to East Chicago, bringing water to the residents of the Calumet neighborhood.

Donations will be used to purchase drinking water for the residents of the Calumet neighborhood of East Chicago.

WHAT: Join us in walking along the path of the tar sands pipelines that pass through our communities to raise awareness and support for a just transition to a renewable energy economy. WHEN: Saturday, May 12, 2017 at 8:00 a.m.

WHERE: The route is 10K (or 6.2 miles). The Walkathon will begin at Purdue Northwest and proceed north through Hammond and East Chicago. We will pass by the West Calumet Housing Complex which has been evacuated due to lead contamination from smelters which previously made lead additives for oil refined at the Whiting refinery. The walk will end at Todd Park, near the BP refinery, in view of petroleum storage tanks. Lunch will be provided. Walkers will be shuttled back to their cars.


WHY: We are on the cusp of a Green Energy Revolution and Northwest Indiana needs to be at the forefront of that movement, for the sake of our economy, for the sake of our health, and for the sake of our children's future.
