I was asked to find a project for some Navy Recruits to do some community service before they went to boot camp. Just five houses down from where I was working on another famly's home to change their lives, I met Mr. Sykes. He is a ARMY Veteran where he served as a medic. He's 74 years old and retired from IBM, but he still works at Samaritan hospital cleaning floors and I'm told bringing smiles to everyone's faces.
I asked Mr. Sykes if I could have some people over to do some yard work and I also asked about his roof because I had noticed the gable vent missing. At that point, he said "I need help." Inside his home, I found the ceilings caving in, some had already fallen in, a bathroom that didn't work, no working appliances, no working air conditioning or heat, and Mr. Sykes sleeping in a chair. I was immediatley overwhelmed. No one deserves to live like this. Mr. Sykes was has been scammed for the past two years. He chose to suffer in his home so that a family friend would not have to suffer through brain cancer. Under the thought that he was paying for a family friend's chemotherapy, Mr. Sykes was scammed out of $30,000. As I dug a little further, Mr. Sykes hasn't had running water, air conditioning, or heat in his home for three years. It's time that we take care of this Veteran.
It's time that we WAKE UP ad RISE UP TOGETHER to help this man. A group of Godly men have been formed to help rebuild Mr. Sykes home, but it is in extremly bad shape. Just to restore water, heat, and air, is $14,000. The walls are molded and everything has to be replaced. We had a community clean up this weekend and absolutely everything was takend from the house. We bought a new bed and chairs at a yard sale. Everything from flooring, cabinets, bathroom, appliances, drywall, pipes, and everything else you need to live down to a toothbrush is needed for Mr. Sykes. We have started with getting a brand new roof donated and installed this past weekend. We hope you will help us perform a miracle for this man by repairing and transforming his home.
