The Life of Waffles
My family and I adopted Waffles in November of 2013. We fell in love with her kind heart and playful spirit from the moment we first saw her. To this day, she loves to play with pipe cleaners, Christmas bows, Chinese food take out bags- you name it, she'll play with it. Over the past few years, she has grown into the sweet kitty we know and love. She will be turning just 4 years old this August, and our time spent with her this far has changed our lives for the better. This happy little creature has truly made our family whole.
The Problem
However, for most of her life, Waffles has had a medical condition that has taken a toll on her both physically and mentally. (Her condition has also taken a toll on my family emotionally and financially.) Waffles has been in a cone for almost 3 years now due to her itching her ears, eyes, and chin uncontrollably. Without wearing the cone, she itches to the point where blood is drawn and all of her fur falls out. (This is a heartbreaking sight to see and the pictures are not pretty). At one point, her itching got so bad that she scratched her head against any surface she could find and all of her fur on her face fell out. Her scabs were exposed, and she was a bloody mess. I don't have the heart to post a picture of her at her worse, but you can imagine the pain she experiences from the two pictures I have posted below. Wearing the cone, she struggles to live her normal life and has become very depressed and aggressive. Not only has she become aggressive to the plethora of vets she has visited, but also with friends and family. After visiting 4 different vets, completing blood work and tests, taking multiple medications, feeding her allergy-friendly diets, and trying home remedies, just about every 'common' reason she could be itching has been ruled out. After trial and turbulation, no vet could stop Waffles from itching and get her out of the cone. She is currently on a steroid shot which reduces her symptoms, but wears off quickly. Treatment so far has landed my family into $4,000+ of credit card debt, and unfortunately the bills are continuing to add up. We have been trying to get back on our feet financially, but Waffles is still suffering.

The 'Cure'
Desperate for answers, my family decided to take her to see a specialist at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in May of this year. The pet dermatologist diagnosed Waffles with environmental allergies. We thought this news would finally be the answer to Waffles' problem; not exactly. These allergies cannot be cured. To maintain her condition and allow her to live a happy, normal life without wearing the cone, she will need to take a daily medication. This medication will cost approximately $100 per month, which is one more bill my family cannot afford. But before we can give her medication, she needs to be sedated in order to flush out all of the bacteria in her ears caused from her allergies. (The bacteria causes the itching.) The sedation and cleaning of her ears can range anywhere from $550-$800. My family has reached the point where we thankfully have found an answer, but cannot find the money to get Waffles proper treatment.

Never in a million years did I think I would be asking strangers on the internet for money- part of me feels wrong in doing so. (Never in a million years did I think we would adopt a cat with a mysterious itching problem either- never say never). But... My father is the most hard working person I know and does everything possible to keep my family AND Waffles well and happy. It is unfortunate his income alone is not enough to help Waffles receive proper treatment. My father, brother, and I have all pitched in financially to help Waffles along her journey, but we cannot continue to afford her medical bills.

We love this cat more than anything else. She is a part of our family. If we cannot move forward with her treatment, we have no choice but to put her down or give her away. This is a thought I cannot bare to think of, but she cannot live the rest of her life in a cone.

At this time, Waffles desperately needs treatment with the specialist before her condition returns and worsens. Any donation is truly a blessing and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
