Margarita is the granmother and takes care of five children. Her pension granted by the Mexican government is only for one person, 475 mexican pesos per month, like 24 Euros. This covers all the house expenses, including the 5 children. The mother of the children died 4 months ago, and the absent parents just bring a few pesos sometimes, while a grandchild brings some rice and meat occasionally. The food is always the same, coffee and bread for breakfast, and tortillas and beans for lunch. Many days the children can't go to school for lack of resources. Margarita is a true juggler, a great survivor.

Margarita es la abuela de 5 pequeños/as de los que se hace cargo. Ella cobra una pensión mínima que otorga el gobierno mexicano a personas de escasos recursos económicos. La ayuda es para una sola persona y está fijada en 475 pesos mejicanos al mes -aproximadamente 24 Euros-. Con ello cubre todos los gastos de la casa, el suyo y el de los/as 5 menores. La mamá de los menores falleció hace apenas 4 meses y los padres ausentes apenas aportan algún peso al cabo de los meses; mientras tanto, un nieto ya mayor de edad, aporta puntualmente algo de arroz y carne. Apenas varía la alimentación: café y pan para desayunar, tortillas y frijoles para comer. Muchos días no asisten a la escuela por falta de recursos. Margarita es una verdadera malabarista, una gran superviviente.

How much it cost?
Initial Budget: 1.000 Euros for 6 months. Covers all the transportation and school meals for 4 kids for 6 months. Fees and taxes.
Transportation to and from school located 8 kilometers away, the inaccessibility in isolated communities is one of the reasons for children to leave school, their education, so is very important to avoid school dropouts.
School meals as their only complete daily meal, something basic for a correct growing and intellectual development os the children.

Apoyar a la Señora Margarita con la educación y alimentación de sus nietos sufragando el gasto del transporte y el comedor escolar.

Presupuesto inicial: 1.000 Euros por 6 meses. Cubre transporte escolar y comedor de los cuatro menores escolarizados. Impuestos y tasas.
Los trayectos hacia y desde la escuela, situada a 8 kilómetros, siendo la inaccesibilidad a las escuelas causa importante del abandono escolar en comunidades aisladas.
El comedor, como única comida completa diaria y base para el crecimiento y desarrollo físico e intelectual de los/as menores.

DESCRIPTION OF OUR HISTORY [ENG]
Mrs Margarita, is the grandmother of many in San Agustín. She lives in a wood cabin, near the little mangrove is preserved and a few meters from the beautiful coral. Even so, still a simple house with a wood stove on the porch, a common room for all without running water. Their company, many chickens, two dogs, three cockatiels, a squirrel and, and the most important, 5 small children . Her grandchildren, aged 3 to 12 years is a lot for a 65 years woman, a lot of work and also joy.
A typical day starts before 8, shortly after the rooster starts to sing. Between discussions on going or not going to school, Margarita makes coffee, fresh bread and some occasional repairing. After getting tired, the grandmother desist and the children stays home, although they like going to school, were they play sports, learn to read and write, they have a good meal, some dancing until they return home. If there is no school, the kids have to work on the beach selling necklaces, where tourists hopefully will give them some sweets and maybe an occasional bath at the sea.
Meanwhile, Margarita cleans the house, goes for wood in the forest, fix and wash clothes of the 5 kids, and start to prepare beans and tortillas, ... so that everything is ready before the children are back home. Hopefully there will be more in the pot, or someone will have helped to get some wood to make the fire.
Gradually they come, eat and do some homework before going out to sell or play until 5, when the workshops start at the library were they play and learn happy. There's where we met them, collaborating for this project of the "Sea Library". There's also where we learned about their strength, and where they told us about their mother who is a star, a big one, always attentive, and above all Margarita a great warrior.

Doña Margarita, es la abuelita de muchos en San Agustín. Vive en una cabaña de madera y chapa, cerca del poco manglar que se conserva y a escasos metros del hermoso coral. Aún así, no deja de ser una casa simple, con cocina de leña en el porche, una habitación común para todos, sin agua corriente. Como compañía, muchas gallinas, dos perros, tres cacatúas, una ardilla y, lo que a nosotrxs nos interesa, 5 pequeñxs. Sus nietxs de entre 3 y 12 años dan mucha guerra con 65 años, pero siempre, mucha más alegría.
Un día común comienza antes de las 8, poco después de que cante el gallo. Entre discusiones sobre si ir o no a la escuela, Margarita va preparando el café, el pan dulce y reparando algún que otro roto. Cuando apenas hay fuerzas o faltan los pesos, la abuelita desiste y el nieto gana quedarse en casa, aunque en el fondo le guste entretenerse en la escuela. Allí hacen deporte, comen el almuerzo en el comedor comunitario, aprenden a leer y escribir, juegan, bailan,.. hasta que regresan a casa. Si no hay escuela, hay que trabajar en la playa vendiendo collares, en donde con suerte, los turistas les regalarán algún que otro dulce y se darán algún que otro baño.
Mientras tanto, Margarita recoge el desorden, va a por leña al bosque, arregla y lava las ropas de los 5, pone a cocer frijoles y tortillas… para que todo esté listo antes de que vuelvan. Para la hora de comer, quizá habrá algo más en la olla o alguien habrá ayudado a recoger madera.
Poco a poco llegan, comen y hacen la tarea para después salir a vender o jugar hasta las 5, cuando empiezan los talleres en ”La biblioteca del Mar” de San Agustín, espacio que les da la oportunidad de jugar y aprenden en conjunto. Es allí en donde les conocimos, es también donde aprendimos de su fuerza, quienes nos enseñaron que su mamá es una estrella, y bien grande, que siempre está atenta y sobre todo, que Margarita es una gran guerrera.

With Rodrigo Gallego's help, the High School Director, and a great support in this initiative, we have developed the basic cost of a kid (school age).
Bussines days 2015-2016: Approx. 200 days.
Everyday cost for each kid: School transportation: 30 mexican pesos (MXN) round trip.
Meal at primary school. 10 MXN.
Meal at high school. 35 MXN.
Cost of school material , secondary education; notebooks, pencils, pens, backpack, rubber, etc: 730 MXN.
Footwear and uniform secondary education; 2 school uniforms 200 MXN each: 400, shoes 350 MXN, sports / tennis: 350
School enrollment per family per year; Primary education: 500 MXN per family, Secondary education: 200 MXN per child.
Several; sports, cultural outings, sharing, celebration party, prom: Contribution of 300 MXN.
That is why we consider the most relevant priori cover daily expenses, these being mainly the shift to school and especially the basic diet.

Gasto aproximado en útiles escolares, educación secundaria; cuadernos, lápices, bolígrafos, mochila, gomas, etc: 730 MXN.
Calzado y uniforme, educación secundaria; 2 uniformes escolares de 200 MXN cada uno= 400 MXN; zapatos: 350 MXN; deportivas/ tennis: 350 MXN
Cuotas de inscripción en escuela por familia al año; Educación primaria: 500 MXN por familia, Educación secundaria: 200 MXN por menor.
Varios; Salidas deportivas, culturales, de intercambio, festejo de fiestas, fin de curso: Aportación de 300 MXN.
Es por ello que consideramos a priori sufragar los gastos más relevantes del día a día, siendo éstos principalmente: el desplazamiento al centro escolar y sobre todo la alimentación básica.
