My name is Victoria Yang and I'm a rising senior at Covenant College. This summer I am participating in the Summer Discipleship Project (SDP) in Monroe , GA, which is a program through the Grace Fellowship Churches. The program lasts from May 27th to August 1st. I found out about this project through friends who have previously participated, and via a church that I have recently begun attending called Grace Midtown. I will have a paid part-time internship (hopefully with the city), engage in intense discipleship and spiritual formation, and immerse myself within and Grace Monroe church and the Monroe community.
I was drawn to this opportunity because of the efforts that the Grace Monroe church has undergone within the past few years to invest in Monroe. Their heart for city transformation is evident both through church ministries, but also through the initative of the church body to do outreach.
When I was looking at the project, the website states, "In the midst of this diverse community, Grace Monroe is seeking to bring the Kingdom in a way that revitalizes the town, reaches families, and impacts the next generation. SDP Monroe is just one piece of a holistic effort to transform a city." I am currently studying International Relations with minors in Spanish and Community Development - and the mission and vision of Grace Monroe matches with what I've been studying in the past 3 years. In my interview for this project, the pastor of Grace Monroe mentioned that he was thinking starting a sustainable jobs program (Jobs for Life) as well considering community housing initatives. These are programs that I am familiar with, and are studied through my Community Development minor. I am considering a future career in city planning as well. Needless to say, I am so stoked about what God is doing through Grace Monroe!!
I will be working (and I am so, so, so grateful to be paid - thank you everyone for supporting me for my salary the past two summers!!!) this entire summer through the program, but the program itself costs $1000 which covers food, gas stipend, housing, and program materials. Lord willing, I will earn more than $1000 this summer, and I will be able to keep anything beyond $1000. However, in anticipation of expenses to be incurred in the first few weeks of my final year of college before I begin working (textbooks, first apartment rent, food), my family situation, and because of unfortunate car repairs, I would like to earn at least $3000 this summer. (I am not allowed to take on another part-time job while in Monroe, as much as I'd like to, due to the demands of the project)
I am not openly advertising this GoFundMe as I have for past internships since I will be working and have a job, but I would appreciate any support. I am trusting Yahweh God that what I end up earning this summer will be more than enough, and that my security is not found in the things of the world but of the Kingdom. I greatly covet your prayers as well, because I believe that this summer will be a transformative, yet grueling, summer.
