Tree Totals Salinero Family Home

Donation protected
Dean Salinero, his wife Lisa, and their two boys Aidan (age 10) and Emett (age 7) lived in a wonderful historic home in the town of Santa Cruz, California, sharing the property with the boy's grandparents.

Life was good until Saturday morning March 5th when a 75 foot, 80 year old Cypress tree crashed through the roof of Aidan and Emett’s bedroom flattening it to the ground. Had it happened a few hours earlier, they likely would not have survived. Luckily they are all early risers. The boys were in the front of the house watching Saturday morning cartoons and Dean was outside the house beginning his day’s work. Lisa, who was in the laundry room, just missed being hit by the top portion of the tree as it crashed through the ceiling missing her by inches. Unbelievably NO ONE WAS HURT! Their guardian angel must have been on high alert that day.

Because of constant rain and unsafe conditions, it took two weeks for the tree to be removed by a crane and a crew of 6 workers. The historic house that was originally an old dance hall, has sadly been condemned and must be torn down. The family removed what few belongings that were salvageable but have lost most of what they own as well as their home. The only clothes available to them were the things they were wearing at the time and articles given to them by loved ones. They have been provided temporary shelter by family and friends but must essentially rebuild their life.

Because the house is uninhabitable, the family needs to find a new home. The grandparents, Judie Mountain and Wayne Robbins, also live and work on the property and sadly have been asked to vacate before any new construction starts. All of the adults in this family compound are self-employed. Not only have they all lost their homes but their business facilities as well. Right now they need help getting a roof over the Salinero family’s head so Aidan and Emett can continue their school year and get things back to as normal condition as possible. This “gofundme” account will hopefully give them the help they need to relocate. By our calculations, they will need approximately $7,500 to cover deposits and two month's rent for a residence that can accommodate their family.

The Salineros are part of the DeLaveaga School community and associated through work with Keller Williams Realty in Santa Cruz. Dean and Lisa are deeply rooted to this area. Dean was born and raised in the Santa Cruz area where his family also lives. Lisa and her family have lived in the area since she attended UCSC. These relationships within the community and the close family and friends are sources of unconditional support and love helping them through this difficult time. The last thing they want to do is move out of the area that has been their home for 15 years and relinquish these strong ties to Santa Cruz and its people. After living and working in this home for what seems like a lifetime, they are now faced with a task they have never had to face before; finding a new home at rental rates far above what they were paying. A lot has changed in the rental scene within those 15 years, so they need all the help they can get.

Life does go on and they continually remind themselves how lucky they are to still have their family together. Updates to their progress on finding a new home will be posted here, so stay tuned.

Please spread the word that they are looking for a 2 to 3 bedroom rental within the DeLaveaga School district if possible. They are non-smokers, have no pets, and are conscientious tenants. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for all of your help and support.
