Virginia Veterans Resource Center
Mark Failor ASHBURN, VA
VAVETS, a certified 501(c) 3 non-profit, exists for the sole purpose of providing “Local Support for Local Heroes.” We are a 100% volunteer organization with the goal of giving 90% of our donations directly our veterans which include military, police and firefighters.
VAVETS is founded on the principal idea that the most effective way to support Virginia Veterans and their families is at the local level where communities and corporations work side by side to provide local support to our local heroes.
VAVETS currently does not have a home for our operations nor a place to support or provide services to our veterans. We have found a Historic grain mill building fronting the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail in the center of Ashburn, Virginia which is available for lease immediately. This building was built in 1902, and is a contributing structure in the Old Ashburn Historic District (listed on the Virginia Historic Registry). Our initial goal is to lease the 3000sq. foot storage facility and build it out into a facility that is available for use by our veterans and the community.
The facility once operational will be used to provide many services to our veterans as well as a place to relax, remiss and provide social support. We will offer various supports groups to help our veterans cope, education and training to help them find employment, events to bring the community together with those that served.
We will use our facility to provide support for VA paperwork or discuss other benefits that veterans may need help understanding. We will have local doctors and dentists available on some weekends to render services to our veterans or to help them substantiate their VA claims. We will hold pancake breakfasts, holidays meals, bingo nights, and dances to create a feeling of belonging.
We will open the facility for weddings or parties for our veterans at no cost. We will have a running and biking club that will take advantage of the W&OD trail just out the back door. We will conduct races on foot and by bike as fund raisers from this facility. We will have an annual relay run or bike to Arlington Cemetery on each Memorial Day.
All funds raised will be used to expand the restroom facilities, add a kitchen and cold storage, install some type or flooring over the concrete, add some additional windows, improve the heating and cooling and build out a flag stone patio area to be used for outside social events or weddings.
Thank you for your consideration.
