The Fight for my daughter

My name is Amber Ostrom. I am a medicinal cannabis activist. I have had epilepsy and a seizure disorder, used cannabis to treat both, and for over 10 years I have been seizure-free. I moved my daughter, Georgia, down to Arizona in 2012 to help her treat her rheumatoid arthritis.

In Dec. 2013  my brother, a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer, and his wife offered to take care of my daughter while I got back on my feet. Then they took her.

It started with punishing her for things like incomplete homework by reducing the time of our Skype sessions. By March my brother sent me a message saying he did not approve of my choice of employment, a medicinal cannabis dispensary, and my choice of medicine, and I got a call from the Sheriff’s department to tell me that my daughter would be placed in state custody.

For 18 months now I have been in the legal battle of my life, spent over $11,000, and had to pay for everything from counseling to specialists to meet the demands of the courts. (In the meantime, I have only been allowed to see my daughter 2-4  supervised hours per visit/ 8 in the entire year) I have an attorney pro-bono, but the court is demanding that I find a job, find a residence, and move to Kansas in the next 60 days or I will lose custody of my daughter indefinitely. This could change to 30 days at any point, depending on the Judge.

I have exhausted all the funds I can fighting for my daughter, and don’t have the money to move from Arizona to Kansas in under two months. I am currently working at a dispensary in Arizona to raise the funds I can to get my daughter.

The Washington Post has picked up my story recently, and we hopefully plan to challenge CPS’s authority so they cannot take parents from children because of their medicine. But that won’t be in time to get my daughter back. I am not a criminal. I have done nothing wrong and have met all the previous demands of the court. Please help me with this last hurdle, the funds to pick up and move to an entirely different state in under 60 days. Thank you all.

The holidays have arrived and I could not be more grateful to have my child home with me.

With all the expenses in the past months, how can I be sure I can afford to make Christmas special, and the truth is, I can not. Not without assistance.

I am in hopes that everything will work out just fine, but Santa is a little broke this year and my girl has high hopes....I appreciate any assistance and ki ndness sent our direction. HELP ME MAKE GEORGIA'S CHRISTMAS SEASON BRIGHT! :)

I happy to announce that I will be returning home to Arizona from Kansas with my beautiful daughter.

I would like to thank everyone that donated to this fight, however, the costly affect of this case is not over. I have litterally drained all of my family resources. I had to send my Aunt home (she stood by my side as often as possible) this past week, as her home town was on fire in Valley Springs, CA. Where my cousin was fighting his first fire on the front lines. I am grateful for all of her support.

The people I have met along the way are truly amazing.

I am at the beginning, of yet another journey, but this time....daughter in hand!

The fight for justice is not over. There are things that were not handled justly in this case and funding is essential to justice and my continued success with the aftermath, of a case, such as mine.

I appreciate your continued donations and support for this cause.

Sincerely, Amber Thurmond Ostrom
