Prospective Cohort Study of Yoga and Mindfulness for Psychological and Physical Wellness

More than 2.3 million US veterans have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It is estimated that 20 percent of these veterans suffer from some level of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and a published report by the Department of Veteran Affairs says that at least 22 US veterans take their own lives every single day.

While psychotherapy and prescription antidepressants have been the common treatment protocol for our veterans, a new approach is gaining momentum, yoga and mindfullness meditation.  A growing number of studies suggest that yoga and mindfullness meditation practices may help alleviate many of the psychological, physiological, and behavioral symptoms of PTS and TBI.

Over the years we've tragically lost so many members of our military overseas, but what we are forgetting is that the fight continues when these heroes return home.  The Duskin and Stephens Foundation’s FreedOM Project  is partnering with Yoga for Men  to send active duty service members and veterans through the University of South Florida College of Public Health's Prospective Cohort Study of Yoga and Mindfulness for Psychological and Physical Wellness.

The accredited study is an unblinded research study of adults enrolled in an existing commercial wellness program known as Yoga for Men (YfM) that delivers yoga and mindfullness meditation content through an online platform by ReadyOP to U.S. or non U.S. active duty service members and veterans. The proposed project is to provide data management and statistical analysis support to the YfM program through research analysis activities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the program is helpful to veterans with symptoms of PTS and related conditions. These analyses will make use of data that are collected on YfM participants who consent and agree to provide data and receive feedback as a condition of their enrollment and participation in the program. The YfM participants provide an electronic signature of an Assignment of Rights document that grants USF and YfM the right to publish aggregate results from study participants, including completion of self-report instruments that are reliable and valid indicators of psychological and physical well-being. The study activities will include data management and statistical analysis support for de-identified online self-report data that are captured on measures of psychological and physical health at the onset of program enrollment, and at 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-months after enrollment in the program. This includes measures of symptoms of psychological trauma, depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality, and pain.

The cost of sending one active duty service member or veteran through the year-long study is $200 for the entire year.  The goal is to send 200 participants through the study, but there is no capacity.  We have the ability to send as many active duty service members and veterans through the study that are eager to participate.  The Duskin and Stephens Foundation’s FreedOM Project has already pledged $20,000 to cover the scholarships of the first 100 participants.  We are currently looking for sponsors and donors to cover the cost of the additional participants.  Once funding is established, interested parties will submit a brief application and essay to an independent selection committee.

The Duskin and Stephens Foundation’s FreedOM Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.  For your records, the EIN is 47-300962.

Duskin and Stephens Foundation:
Duskin and Stephens Foundation supports the United States Special Operations Community through direct support to families of fallen Operators, healing programs designed to combat the effects of PTS, TBI and loss of a loved one, and youth scholarships for children of active duty members of our community.

Yoga for Men
Yoga for Men is dedicated to getting men as well as women on the mat. They do this by offering online streaming classes at YfM.tv, providing information and inspiration through their community of 150k Facebook fans, and by manufacturing a line of eco-friendly men's yoga clothing, which is made entirely in the USA. "Our name is Yoga for Men, because we want to get more men to practice yoga, but we offer classes for EVERYONE. Women are an instrumental part of the YfM community, and we couldn't and wouldn't carry on without them," explains Yoga for Men.
