What helps veterans reintegrate?

How do veterans return to civilian life?  What helps them? What are their struggles and triumphs? What can we do better? As thousands of men and women return from military service and combat experiences, there is a pressing need to listen to their stories and learn about their experiences.

I am a PhD in social work candidate  and the mother of an active duty serviceman doing my dissertation research on these very questions. The goal of the study is to tell veterans stories in their own voices and learn about what's working and what's needed.

This qualitative dissertation study involves interviewing 40 veterans, transcribing and analyzing the data collected in the interviews and writing an in depth report of the results.

Your donation will help fund the transcription and analysis of the data and producing the final document.

As I meet and talk to veterans and active duty service people, including my own son, I feel strongly that my work will add a vitally needed element to our national discussion of our responsibility to the people who go out and do the hard and dangerous work of military service on behalf of all of us.

I am in the process of conducting interviews and donations are needed now to help fund transcription and data analysis. Please help me complete this work..  Thank you so much for your assistance.

To the all the incredibly generous family and friends who helped fund transcribing my dissertation interviews and all who have helped and supported me in so many ways.....

I want to let you know that yesterday I submitted the final chapter of the dissertation report to the advisors at Stony Brook for comment and review. 220 total pages of text.

With your help I was able to finish transcribing the interviews in March and have spent the past eight months analyzing what the Veterans spoke about in their interviews and writing up the findings.

The Veterans spoke eloquently about their experiences and gave excellent input into how best to help veterans return to civilian life. I believe there is a great deal of useful information in the report and it is my hope that it will be put to good use in the world.

Now, fingers crossed, the revisions to the report will be minor and I will be able to defend my dissertation and graduate this Spring.

AND... you're all invited to the graduation party in May!!!

With my deepest gratitude and thanks

Katherine.

Hello friends and family- here's the update on my dissertation research work to learn abou what helps veterans return to civilian life.

I am focused on listening to the interviews that have been transcribed so far. I'm trying to understand what are the elements of a successful transition after military service - what's working? What can communities do better?

One thing that comes up over and over is that most service people have to go through a transition process when they leave the military regardless of whether they had a combat deployment or not. One female veteran put it this way: " you're changed from the first day you enter basic training." so most soldiers face the challenge of leaving a culture and lifestyle and returning to a world where most people have no idea what they've experienced.

Thank you for all your support so far. Please help me complete this exciting research work so that this information can be put to use to help our current generation of returning veterans

Check out my Gofundme campaign to learn more. Thank you.

thank you to Kathryn Menu and the Sag Harbor Express for the wonderful piece about my son's deployment on the USS Boxer and my research work to learn about how veterans return to civilian life.

Thank you Laura Leever, Shirley Ruch, Casey Crandell and Joe Daley for your generous support!

Every year thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen deploy all over the world not only during wartime to protect the safety of the United States but for humanitarian missions and peace keeping support. All service people face the challenge of leaving military life and its culture and returning to civilian life. It's not just men and women who've experienced combat trauma and PTSD.

Listening to the 40 interviews I've conducted with veterans who served between 1990 and 2014, I'm hearing about what's helping them and where we need to do better.

Please support my research and help me get this project done so the information can be put to good use. Thank you for your support.
