My name is Ryan Timmermans, and like many soldiers, I was not well when I returned from my first tour in Afghanistan.  I came back changed and felt like an alien in my own country. My mind and body were damaged, and I didn't know how to make them right. I knew I had to get help but was having a hard time finding it.  Out of desperation, I returned to Afghanistan to try to figure out what had happened to me.

While I was there, I found out that I was not alone in my failure to successfully rejoin society.   I resolved in that moment that I would dedicate my life to help restore to greatness those who answered our nations call to serve. I founded a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called Veterans Off-Grid to do just that.

The harsh reality is that:

Twenty-two veterans will take their own life today

40,000 veterans will sleep on the street tonight

Our veterans are often forgotten and left to figure out how to reintegrate with little training.

This is our chance to help them.

VOG is a team of veteran and civilian volunteers with a mission to alleviate veteran homelessness and support reintegration with society by building sustainable veteran communities. We are building a bridge for veterans transitioning from military life back into civilian life through healthy relationships with community and nature. Please join Veterans Off-Grid in building our first home for a homeless veteran while helping to protect our planet for future generations.

DONATE.    VOLUNTEER.    SPREAD THE WORD.

The Need

$11,750 buys the building materials we need to complete Phase One of our Summer Build 2018.  This first structure is a 320 sq. ft. Earthship-inspired building that will shelter and empower veterans throughout its long life. This home will also act as proof of concept for our future builds within the Veterans Off-Grid Carson Community.  It will allow us to apply for permits, prepare the site, build the house and install the systems that make it a sustainable home.

We already have three veterans who need a home and are excited about joining our growing community. Veteran residents donate 35 hours per month to help build a home for the next veteran.

Hey everybody! I am super excited and humbled to say that we just got selected by the GoFundMe team as one of their top 100 for the month of July and received a $1000.00 donation as part of their give back campaign! This 1000.00 will be matched by an anonymous donor and the combined total will purchase the 1750 gallon cistern that will continue to collect totally free water from the rain for the life span of the house! No Fluoride or other harmful chemical additives, just pure rain-caught desert water. Water is life! Thank you for continuing to share and reach out to your friends on our behalf! See below picture for how an Earthship design uses water 4 times throughout the house to maximize each drop collected.

Thank you again for your donation to our campaign to raise funds for materials for our project Summer Build 2018: Phoenix Rising!

We want to give you a quick update--we've reduced the goal for this campaign as we've decided to break it down into a couple of phases. The new goal is $11,750 for Phase One--acquiring the materials for the structural completion of our first home.

We also have a matching donor incentive we'll announce later this week. Again, thank you, and please share this widely!
