Veteran "skip"

"There's times I don't even know where my next loaf of bread is coming from," Hampton said. "That's how bad it is at times."

As Hampton spoke with 40/29 news, sweat was pouring down his face, "Oh yeah, I'm sweating, yeah."

Hampton has fans, but a window unit is the only air conditioner in his home. It's set at 69 degrees and it can't keep his house cool.

"That's all I can afford right now," said Hampton.

The Vietnam veteran is a former truck driver who broke his back years ago and recently survived a heart attack.

Hampton said his only income was from a social security check for a little more than $1,000 each month, "It's not easy right now at all, I'm telling you it's not."

"Skip kind of just touched our hearts, hearing his stories, see how long he's been here," said Alejandro Cardenas.

Cardenas is a former Marine who now renovates houses.

Cardenas met Hampton while he was remodeling a house next door to the disabled veteran.

On Tuesday, a co-worker fixed a leak under Hampton's kitchen cink, but, Cardenas told 40/29 News his home needs a lot more work.

Cardenas said the bathroom is the first priority, "You have to be careful when you walk in, there's a hole right there and the floor's giving out."

Years of mold and rot encrusted the bathtub, "There's water leaking underneath and it's creating mold and bacteria, the outside elements are coming in, water, rain and everything," Cardenas said. "You can see through the wall if you get down in there."

Cardenas is seeking donations of building supplies and volunteers to help make Hampton's house into a home for a veteran in need.

"Anything helps, anything helps," Cardenas said. "It would make [Hampton] feel a lot better that there's people out there that care, especially fellow veterans like myself."

"I think he's one fine gentleman is what I think," said Hampton.

Cardenas told 40/29 News he would do the work for free, but, he's hoping the community will come together to help fix Hampton's house.
