Vet Expenses for Ron

Ron is a retired racing greyhound who loves a good run around the yard. Late this winter, he broke his toe. Our vet suggested we let it heal naturally and use a splinted cast. We went back every week to get a rewrap but around week 5 he started to act particularly annoyed. Instead of rewrapping that week, the vet suggested we try to push through for one more week.

Unfortunately during those last two weeks in the cast he developed two large, painful ulcers on both sides of his foot. We're forced to switch gears and treat the skin, despite the bone not being fully healed. The larger of the two ulcers is fairly deep (tendon is visible) and is surrounded by dead and dying skin. This requires several sessions of debridement under sedation.

He's currently on 4 different medications including two for pain, an antibiotic, and an anti anxiety medicine. Our costs are currently just under $1500 from the start of the broken bone treatment. The future debridement sessions, rewraps, and prescriptions will cost us around $450 a week for the next 4-6 weeks.

Once the skin is healed, we then have to reevaluate the broken toe. If it doesn't heal during the ulcer treatment period then we'll be faced with either more splinted casts or amputation.

Ron is such a laid back and loving dog. Everyone that meets him loves him and he's always willing to hang around for more pets. He's being such a trooper during all this, but it's clear he's irritated and down in spirit.

We just want to get through this period so we can love and spoil Ron like he deserves!
