Veronica and Hal have been married for 20 years and have 18 and 16 year old daughters. Hal served 6 years in the National Guard and almost 31 years in law enforcement.
Several years ago, they realized their dream to move onto the banks of the Saline River in south Arkansas. They carefully chose the highest ground in the area due to recurring flooding. In the six years they’ve lived there, the one bedroom house had never flooded. But, the February 2018 flood was a record and the flood waters did enter the house containing all of their furniture, appliances, etc.
To add to this personal disaster, Hal’s health concerns caused him to become disabled in 2016. This greatly reduced the family’s income and has caused the need for Veronica to work two jobs to support the family.
The couple decided in 2017 it was time to build a somewhat larger and more elevated home and made the decision to pull the money out of Hal’s retirement in order to begin buying materials for the build. Over a period of several months they had accumulated items such as flooring, wall materials, kitchen materials, etc. As the flood waters rapidly rose and forecasts indicated this might be a record flood, they placed many of these materials on a dock with floats that was being built on the ground beside the location of the new house. Unfortunately, there was too much weight on the dock and it did not float. The building materials were subjected to the flood waters. Some, such as wood, were ruined while others floated off down the river.
Veronica and Hal are people who are models of helping others. They’ll give their last $20 to a homeless guy on the street and help neighbors and friends when they don’t have the time nor money. They are now in their hour of need and we’re hoping folks will see the need and respond. Thank you for any amount you are able to give.
