Venezuelan Chemistry Team!

Dear friends of the Venezuelan Chemistry Olympiad,

The Venezuelan team for the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad  in Prague and Bratislava (19 - 29 July 2018) needs your help!

Our team is ready to meet talented students representing their countries from all over the world. Within this campaign, AVOQUIM (The Association of Venezuelan Chemistry Olympiad) aims to raise EUR 5,000, which will go towards the trip costs of the delegation to the event, travel insurances and participations fees. The raised amount will be transfered to the head mentors who are buying the insurances, travel tickets and paying the fees directly.

Join us in supporting our students and excellence in science education in Venezuela. Your help will secure their participation!

A bit more about Chemistry Olympiads in Venezuela:

In the past 14 years, the members of AVOQUIM have been advocating for the chemistry Olympiad program in Venezuela. Through its events, AVOQUIM reaches every single corner of the country, motivates students and teachers, and ultimately enriches the educational system in Venezuela. AVOQUIM provide opportunities for talented students to further develop their scientific skills and become a beacon of hope for the future technologists that will propel the development of Latin America. The organization AVOQUIM works totally ad honorem with the support of several institutions that provide qualified personnel, teaching rooms and labs.

Throughout the history of the International and Iberoamerican Chemistry Olympiads, Venezuelan teams have accumulated  a total of 70 medals, 12 honorable mentions and in 2003 the best practical examination award!

Alumni from the Olympiads now occupy positions in the best universities around the world, have become industry leaders, and -most importantly- help to connect Venezuela with world developments and are a fundamental force that keeps projects such as the Olympiads alive.

Our 2018 team is composed by 4 students:

Luis Parra (Táchira), Andrés de Sousa (Lara), Jesús Zambrano (Táchira) y José Gabriel Rosa (Miranda)

and two mentors:

Dr. César A. Urbina-Blanco and Jürgen Vargas Schmitz.

Our students were medallists at the Venezuelan National Olympiad 2018, and have been training to achieve the required level to participate in international competitions. Nevertheless, their participation seems threatened by the continued economic crisis that Venezuela faces. As of last year, AVOQUIM has decided to call upon the generosity of all the friends of the Venezuela Olympiads to overcome these economic hurdles. In exchange for your contribution, our students will have the experience of a lifetime; connect our country with the rest of the world; propel their future scientific careers; and by doing so brighten Venezuela’s science future.

This year the International Chemistry Olympiad turns 50, and it’s going “back to where it all began” B-)

To celebrate this special occasion, the Olympiad will be hosted by two cities, Bratislava and Prague, both belonging to the extinct Czechoslovakia, the country that hosted the IChO for the first time. This year, talented students from 82 countries from around the world will demonstrate their skill and tests their knowledge in chemistry as part of this celebration that bonds students through chemistry.
