VegFest St Lucia

Every 21 seconds someone hears the three words that will change their life as they know it: “You have diabetes.” As a part of Team Diabetes, you will raise critical funds and show support for all people living with diabetes. Your donation directly supports education and advocacy for people living with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. (American Diabetes Association)

St. Lucia is an island in the Caribbean that measures 238sq miles, with a population of 180,000 people. For as beautiful an island, rich in history, breath-taking sandy beaches and the friendliest people on the planet, 14.6% of the population suffer from diabetes, 57.4% are overweight and 27% are considered obese.

The VegFest initiative will serve as an educational platform to encourage the general population on better nutrition and dietary choices, minimizing the use of processed and imported foods while utilizing locally grown and readily available ingredients, backyard farming and sustainable living choices. This, we believe will reduce the healthcare burden on the Island.

VegFest is an event that takes place around the world in various cities and counties. To date, there has not been such an event in the Caribbean. We see this as a great opportunity to promote healthy eating habits and facilitate a downward trend in diabetes cases for the people of St Lucia.

This GoFundMe fundraising initiative is to provide support, materials, and supplies to the volunteers/participants who will be promoting VegFest throughout the island. They will be facilitating Diabetes and Preventative Health Education Outreach Events to the 17 Districts of St Lucia, engaging with multiple schools in those districts, targeting students between the ages of 5 to 15 years old.  The goal is to empower the young people in each district by establishing district "VegFest Ambassadors" to provide ongoing community health outreach.
