35190278_1544782476179485_r.jpegLauren’s world was turned upside down this week with the diagnosis of tongue cancer which would need radical reconstructive surgery at the young age of just 25 years old.
On Friday 7th December, Lauren underwent an incredibly difficult surgery which lasted 16 hours. The tongue reconstruction was managed via an incision across the neckline from ear to ear. Muscle and tissue had to be taken from her arm as well as an artery. Her arm was then repaired using a skin graft from her thigh.
Unfortunately it was discovered that the tumour had progressed into her neck and towards the base of her skull.
Due to the delicacy of the positioning of the tumour, next to the aorta and jugular, the surgeons were unable to reach all of the cancer.
During the surgery a nerve to her vocal chords was damaged, which will mean extensive rehabilitation and repair lasting up to 18 months.
She faces radiation and chemotherapy and of course a long and complicated path to rehabilitation. She will be fed through a tube through her stomach for months and is breathing via tracheostomy.
The medical expenses will be ongoing.
Lauren has recently completed a Bachelor of Public Health and a Masters in Forensic Science. There is of course now a big question mark as to whether she will be able to pursue her chosen career path.
Please help ease Lauren’s financial struggles through this horrendous time.
Any donation, however small, would be greatly appreciated and will help Lauren and her family focus on fighting this hideous disease.
Incredibly, she has never smoked a cigarette in her life and doesn’t drink alcohol.

We would like to once again thank you for the generous donations you have made towards Lauren’s fund.
We thought since a few months has gone by many of you may wonder how Lauren is recovering from her surgery and treatment and would like to update you with her progress.

After the surgery even though the road was unimaginably difficult, Lauren was incredible in her recovery from her surgery including beginning to learn to talk again.
Her courage and mental toughness is a total inspiration.
She continued to amaze the doctors with how well she was healing and was happy to be allowed to go home to continue her recovery on Christmas Eve, still mostly being tube fed.
Her treatment began at the end of January and unfortunately has not been without its difficulties.

In February she was readmitted to hospital for a two week period with an infection and difficulty managing severe nausea and temperatures.
It was at that time a lump in her neck was also discovered and found to be more cancer in a lymph node and also the cancer had returned to the site of surgery in her tongue.
This has meant an increase in her radiation, meaning more severe side effects, burns, blistering and ulcerations. She is unable to eat at all and is still being tube fed.

After what seemed to be one complication after another she was released again and allowed to resume treatment as an outpatient.

After a little over a week at home, she was having radiation last Monday when her blood pressure dropped to 65/50. The emergency team was raced into cancer care and Lauren was taken into ICU where she stayed for the next 3 days.
Currently Lauren is in a ward and will spend her 26th birthday tomorrow in hospital.
We wish to thank you once again for the overwhelming support each of you has provided. Please keep Lauren in your prayers and thoughts as she continues to fight this disease.
