Vaughn Family Care

As some of you know may know, my brother-in-law Patrick Vaughn was in a cycling accident on Monday September 23rd. When he did not return home from a ride, Quinn ultimately found him at Highland Hospital in Oakland. He had crashed on Snake Road, was found by a good samaritan, and taken by ambulance to the emergency room. Outside of two fractures to bones in his face and major road rash, the biggest concern was that Patrick was extremely confused, altered and staying asleep unless roused. What we first thought was a severe concussion looks now like a Traumatic Brain Injury.

As the first few days passed, Patrick’s progress was slower than expected and he remained confused. When asked the year his answer varied from 1986-2019 and he did not know where he was or why he was there. Still Patrick’s spirit peaked out. During a PT session a nurse asked, what type of pastor are you? He paused and reflected with eyes shut for a time and murmured “compassionate”. So true!

Patrick has now transferred to the Acute Rehabilitation Center at Alta Bates Summit Hospital in Oakland. He will be working with physical, occupational, and speech therapists to regain his memory and prepare for his return home. While we have every reason to plan on a full recovery the road ahead will be challenging for Patrick and his family. The time there is open-ended and undetermined. The current track is to stimulate his body and reorganize his brain during the day and to rest at night!

Quinn, Joy & Terry (Patrick’s parents), Emily George and others have been at his side without wavering. With prayer, grace, hope, patience they are showering Patrick with love and compassion. Every morning they have a devotion and throughout the day are aiding with physical therapy and brain stimulation to help create new pathways. Patrick’s kids, Whitworth and Vivienne, visited with daddy and got to kiss and hug him.

The Vaughns are so thankful for the care and support they have already received. They are also thankful to have an amazing Church to live with and work for, good insurance and paid time off. But as they embark on this road to recovery and a new normal there will be many expenses both expected and unforeseen.
