Vaso String Quartet

The Vaso String Quartet formed under the guidance of composer Philip Glass and violinist Tim Fain at the 2018 Scotia Festival of Music in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over the course of the festival, we grew both musically and personally by playing together, and would love to continue doing so in the future. Although we still intend to perform traditional string quartet repertoire, we are inspired to explore the music of composers who have been less visible in the classical realm, such as women/non-binary, non-Caucasian, LGBTQ+, and emerging artists. “Vaso”, Spanish for “glass”, refers to the first pieces we performed together (quartets by Philip Glass and Astor Piazzolla), but it also encapsulates our ambition to crack the glass ceiling that confronts women and social minorities.
We are striving to launch our career together, and already we have concert engagements for August 24th in Toronto, ON, and September in London, ON, amongst other plans for Cleveland and Montreal. However, as we move forward in our mission to be proponents of underrepresented composers, we also have to acknowledge the challenges confronting our music-making. Two of us live in Toronto, one in Cleveland, and one in Montreal. Three of us are recent graduates and one has another year of school left, so our financial resources are limited.
We are asking for help in making our concerts happen and getting ourselves started as a quartet over the next year. Specifically, we are hoping for this fundraising campaign to help us cover the costs of travel, venue rental, sheet music, and applications for fellowships/residencies.
