Vanuatu Mamas’ English Class

In many rural areas of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu the perception of what women can do is limited to the home. VMEC is changing that perception and changing the lives of our participants and those around them. We believe that SHE can do great things and if SHE can read then SHE can access limitless power.

The Vanuatu Mamas’ English Class (VMEC) celebrated its first graduating class on Mother’s Day of 2015, since then we have shown our participating communities just what SHE can do. VMEC is a small group adult English literacy program designed to educated and empower women in rural communities. For 16 weeks women meet twice a week to learn and grow together, starting with letter sounds and identification each week builds on the other to help women gain the skills necessary to sound out words and share what they have learned with their families.

Now we need your help to expand our program to communities on the islands of Tanna and Pentecost. We are raising funds to help pay for materials and the related cost to train 40 local Ni-Vanuatu women to facilitate the VMEC adult literacy program in their communities.

If SHE can read then SHE can lead and we are asking for your help to meet this need.

Project Overview
With your help we plan to support 20 literacy classes in rural areas of Vanuatu and here is what that looks like:

-200 English literacy workbooks that each student will use during class and keep once the program is completed

-40 Teacher's guides that will facilitators plan and implement each session

-800 local story books to start our student's at home libraries, this year we are also hoping to include a new VMEC title in our offering!

-4 weeks of training, VMEC is planning to host training in two locations. Our six trainers will work with a total of 40 women to help them put their passion to work. Monies raised will go towards materials, lodging, food and transportation.

-300 VMEC bags they are given to our program graduates and facilitators, those left over will be sold to help raise funds for future projects

Follow our story, our progress and our work on our Facebook page at Vanuatu Mamas' English Class

Funds received will be collected and processed through Melanesian Women Today , a non profit registered in the Republic of Vanuatu,  and 100% of funds will go towards VMEC.
