The Great Chess Campaign of 2017

Donation protected
Did you know about 500 million people play chess worldwide on a regular basis?

Did you know there are many chess players in the Shenandaoh Valley who want to compete in state and national chess tournaments?

Did you know that Shenandoah Valley residents drive hours away to enjoy chess competition and learning events, when we can bring these quality chess events here?

Greetings,

My name is Wayne David Hubbard, Jr. and I am the Founder and Director of the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club in Winchester, Virginia.

Shenandoah Valley Chess Club is an affiliate of the United States Chess Federation and partnered with the Handley Regional Library in Winchester, Virginia.  Since 2013 we have taught chess to hundreds of kids and families throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

Chess is a beautiful tool for fostering critical thinking skills in young people.  Chess is even regaining popularity in a tech-driven era.

Our chess program is guided by three simple goals:

1)      To gather the entire community around the 64 squares

2)      To promote the academic benefits of Chess

3)      To introduce the “Royal Game” to a new generation of players

We started in an empty office space with four chessboards and Meetup.com page.  We even had to rent tables and chairs!  Since then, we have hosted over 125 meetings and 7 tournaments for kids and adults.

Our program quickly filled a vital educational need in the community.  We are now assisting neighboring cities and local schools in their effort to build viable chess programs.

Shenandoah Valley Chess Club has a fourth goal and here is where you can help!

We want to establish a non-profit chess program that can benefit the region for years to come.

We have a funding goal $3,700.

Here is a small list of how this money will be used:

Donations will...

+ Help Shenandoah Valley Chess Club become an official 501(C)3 non-profit corporation

+ Develop future tournaments

+ Fund prizes and incentives for kids

+ Sponsor 50 Chesskid.com Gold Status Membership for online chess training

+ Acquire new chess boards, pieces, and clocks.

1 full tournament board costs $12 and can be used for a lifetime with proper care.

+ Provide Shenandaoh Valley Chess Club t-shirts for students who participate 5 times in season

+  Provide gift cards and recognition awards for our dedicated volunteers

+  Develop partnerships with the Virginia Chess Federation and local schools for after-school chess programs.

There are endless avenues for sharing Chess throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

This is only a beginning!

Chess is called the Royal Game, because once upon a time, real kings, queens, and military leaders used it for political education.

In 2017, Chess is experiencing a renassaince unlike ever in its history.  More kids are achieving Chess Master status than ever before.

Chess also provides countless benefits in many areas, such as: brain health, academics, critical-thinking, creativity, and community.

In teaching chess to young people, we give them skills that enrich every area of their lives.

Throughout our campaign, we will show you our growth as a program through stories, photos, and videos.

Since 2013, I have educated hundreds of young people as an outreach advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

I have founded two STEM-based programs  in partnership with nonprofit organizations that inspire kids to think big about their future through science and chess.

In addition, I have an active career in public safety.

By helping this campaign, you are helping us grow our program.

If you cannot give, please spread the word.

We have a winning endgame in sight!

Thank you for your consideration and support.
