On the 24/04/2011 Brian was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and discharged on a regime of drugs and 24/7 oxygen. As IPF progresses, it causes the lungs to harden, causing breathlessness and a lack of oxygen to other organs, hence the need for therapeutic oxygen. Brian spent 10 days in hospital in January 2017 where he was assessed for his suitability for a lung transplant. On the 5/10/2017 Brian was deemed suitable and was put on the active transplant list. Brians condition was rapidly deteriorating due to an increased number of regular chest infections. On 10/11/2017 Brian collapsed again and spent 18 days in hospital. Since then he has been admitted to hospital on more than 11 occasions for extended periods of time to deal with the infections. Unfortunately in January 2018, Brian was removed from the transplant list permanently. The drugs that Brian was given, and had to take, to get rid of his infections  had compromised his heart. The transplant team decided that Brian was a risk and they were not willing to take the risk of surgery, just in case Brian suffered any post surgery complications. Understandably, judgement calls have to be made as organs are precious. The simple fact is, we do not have enough donors in Ireland to meet the demand. Thankfully, Brian has secured treatment in Chennai, India. All necessary paperwork and medical reports have been completed and we shall be travelling to India early in the new year, 2019. The cost however is not covered by the Irish government treatment abroad scheme. As treatment cost is €180k + all donations are very much appreciated
