Education and Interculturality

The Sol y Luna Association began funding the Sol y Luna School in Urubamba, Cusco, Peru in 2009. Since then, we have been developing our mission of working for the education and inclusion of the children of the Sacred Valley in Urubamba and the surrounding communities. Many of our children lack financial resources and/or face problems, such as violence or abandonment. Our goal is to include them all, and offer them all the same opportunities. As of today, we have almost 200 students from 20 different communities and more than 95% receive a full or partial scholarship. Among the services we provide are education, transportation, snacks and lunch, creative workshops, psychological support, school for parents, integration trips, intensive English program, and Quechua classes.

In addition, since 2015, we have had Paqari, a center for children with different abilities. Our goal is to include them progressively in regular classes and in the community. Our Paqari students receive therapy and rehabilitation according to their needs, special academic education, psychological counseling and social support. We also offer emotional support for their entire family.

The Sol y Luna Home

As we wish to continue supporting more children, we just opened our own shelter, the Sol y Luna Home. This program of the Sol y Luna Association was born with the purpose of providing a safe and pleasant home for those children of the Sol y Luna School that for some reason are abandoned or are victims of violence or abuse.

At Sol y Luna Home, our children find housing, food, and clothing, and find their material and emotional needs provided for, which helps them to develop as physically, mentally, emotionally and morally healthy people.

Children and teen agers have the responsibility to keep their rooms clean and tidy, and during the holidays they help with household chores, such as working in the kitchen or laundry, washing dishes, cleaning, etc.

We want our children and teenagers to feel loved, accepted and respected, as well as having a sense of belonging, by being part of a family.

We need your support to cover the budget of food, health services, utilities  (water, electricity, gas), cleaning supplies and staff for the house to be able to continue to provide a safe home and loving family to our children.

In 1998, Petit Miribel and Franz Schilter came to the Urubamba valley hoping to do work that would benefit the children of the area. They started by supporting various local schools: improving infrastructure, providing materials and supplies, and running cultural and sporting activities. They continue their commitment by working with local families, children, and the community at large. The Sol y Luna Association was born of these values of inclusion and equality. After 10 years of supporting various schools and projects, Petit and Franz decided to create the Sol y Luna School in order to encourage social integration and offer local children a level of education that lets them be agents in their own development.

Information for those who donate:

I am handling the collection of funds, and I live in the U.K., so donations are being received in Great British Pounds. The funds will be transferred to the Sol y Luna Association in Peru on a periodic basis. Donors from the US and other parts of Europe will automatically have their donations converted to GBP. For US donors, here's a simple conversion chart (based on the exchange rate as of March 27, 2019), which may help you determine the amount of your donation in GBPs.
