OSL's Food In Motion Mobile Kitchen

Throughout Washington State there are areas known as food deserts. A food desert is a neighborhood that lacks accessible and affordable food options, including grocery stores, restaurants, food banks, or meal programs. No to low income, elder adults, children, families and individuals living directly on the street are the populations most often impacted by food deserts. These communities have a right to accessible food and are in dire need of nutritional support.
In 2015, to help combat the inequity of food deserts, OSL began planning for the purchase of a 18 foot step side van, fully equipped as a Mobile Meal Kitchen (MMK). The cost of this vehicle is $150,000. This mobile kitchen will allow us to travel to food deserts throughout the greater Seattle area and deliver healthful meals to those in need. We project that with this vehicle we will serve 20,000 unduplicated individuals struggling with hunger in our communities. This vehicle will also serve as an educational lab for populations challenged with hunger, providing training on nutritional meal preparation using foods from donated sources.
To date we have raised $62,200 towards the purchase price of the MMK. We are optimistic that with your help we will be able to raise the remaining funds toward the purchase of the MMK, making this dream a reality! Join us in helping to provide nutritional excellence to Seattle's most vulnerable.

Nutritional Excellence is a right we are born to and not a privilege we earn.
OSL began in 1989 with the delivery of 30 sack lunches to Seattle's food insecure. Twenty-Nine years later OSL manages 5 kitchens and serves meals to 32 partner organizations. By prioritizing dignity, care and compassion, OSL serves 3 healthy and nutritious meals a day, year round. In 2017 we served 648,908 meals and anticipate serving an additional 150,000 more in 2018.
WHAT WE DO:
• OSL SERVES: 3 meals a day every day of the year, over 650,000 meals annually
• COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: Provides community service opportunities to more than 3,700 volunteers annually
• MEALS PARTNERSHIP COALITION: Represents more than 100 meal providers; supports , advocates politically, provides resources and education.
• NEXT STEP: Trains clients , other meal providers, and the greater community how to create nutritionally dense and excellent tasting meals with donated food.
• OUTDOOR MEAL SITE: OSL Manages the OMS for the City providing security, quality control, scheduling of weekend and evening providers and facilitating the service of 170,000 meals annually from the site.
• FOOD IN MOTION: Rescues and redistributes more than 1,218, 000 pounds of viable food before it enters the waste stream. We have 52 rescue donor partners and serve 32 rescue recipients .
