DeVon in Graduate School

Hello , I am DeVon A. Pruitt, an HBCU Bridge graduate student at University of Chicago. This yearlong post-baccalaureate initiative at Chicago is designed for HBCU alumni to explore graduate programs, to network and research with excellent faculty, and to prepare for the rigor of full-time graduate programs across the country. I am taking courses in law, public policy, and divinity.
I chose to study these disciplines because of my commitment to social justice, which was encouraged by my family and faith communities and fostered by my alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana. Be it a sermon at church, advice from a family/community elder, or a reminder of Xavier’s mission, I was taught that service to God and humanity means to stand for justice; work for the oppressed; and create a more just and humane world. I have attempted to live up to these ideals by practicing them through involvement in community activism and student government, as well as my recent professional roles in human resources and higher education. And now, I seek more knowledge and skills to continue what I have started and investigate potential future paths for service.
Gaining this opportunity is beyond anything I had imagined for myself. But, as it is with most things, if greatness is desired, sacrifice is required. The sacrifice before me is largely financial. The University graciously provides a tuition waiver, but I am responsible for the following expenses:
Student Life Fee: $1,000 Medical Insurance: $1600
Total: $2,600.00
Please consider supporting me through a financial contribution to my educational expenses. While this is a significant investment, I have confidence in this program and its ability to prepare me for full-time graduate study.
If you are unable to contribute financially, I welcome and appreciate any support resources you can offer or refer me to –most especially, housing in the Chicago area; paid internships; or graduate scholarships, fellowships, and cost-effective student loans.
Here I am, a young man from a small city, attending a premier academy, representing my family and beloved Xavier, and preparing for a vocation of service to others. Your support will support this experience, and help me achieve my ultimate goal, which is to create real and impactful change in our world.
Blessings and gratitude from,
DeVon A. Pruitt
