Unite for Austin Price

Tahoe native and Roseville resident, Austin Price, who just celebrated his 40th birthday, suffered a subdural hematoma on September 17, 2015.

A subdural hematoma is bleeding on the outside of the brain. We’re not sure of the exact cause, which is the case in about half of all patients who suffer from this condition. They often develop over a period of days to weeks and result in a traumatic brain injury, which unfortunately, is what happened to Austin.

Many know Austin (aka Gooze) from his days playing basketball for South Tahoe High, where he clinched the winning shots in the 1992 state championship game and went on to earn the title of Northern Nevada MVP in '93. Others know Austin from his time in the Sacramento-Roseville area, where he worked in the mortgage industry and stayed active in community basketball.

Austin is also my warm, hilarious and fun-loving dad. He’s a die-hard 49’ers fan with an energy and vitality that is infectious. The quote, “there are no strangers, only friends you have not met yet,” sums him up perfectly – he becomes instant friends with just about everyone he meets. And his friends and family mean the WORLD to him.

My dad underwent emergency surgery last Thursday night and wasn’t expected to survive. My family was told to prepare for the worst. We were devastated.  But within several hours, he began showing signs of life. He scratched his neck and began moving his left hand. The next day, he began squeezing his hand to commands, showing us that he understood! By the third day, after the critical 72-hour mark had passed, my dad was giving us the thumbs up. Since then he has been making promising progress each day – tapping his foot, lifting his arm, throwing us a hang loose sign and even giving fist bumps. My family and I are overjoyed by his progress.

My dad has already overcome the biggest hurdle: he survived! But recovery from a traumatic brain injury is a very slow process and he has a very long road ahead of him. We're hoping to relieve some of the financial burden by raising funds to help with his medical and rehabilitation expenses, which will be exorbitant. My dad has always been there for friends and family alike, willing to offer his hand and support without question. Anyone who knows my dad knows this giving nature of his and right now my dad needs as many hands as possible to unite together for his recovery. Please help us spread the word by sharing this post (with the hashtag #Unite4ap) and donate if you can.

The outpouring of love, concern, and prayers for my dad, from friends, family, community members and people all over the world has been immeasurable. On behalf of the entire Price family, our deepest thanks!
