Minneapolis City SC is a non-profit, member-supported soccer club that plays in the National Premier Soccer League with a mission to provide a platform for Minnesota's best amateur players to compete at a national level and use soccer to make a difference in our community.
As the top team within Stegman's Soccer Club, we’ve taken the best of the best in the organization and put together a squad that represents Minnesota amateur soccer; and we are the only team from MN that is competing in the qualifying rounds of the U.S. Open Cup, the oldest national competition in the US.
Coming off an exciting win on the road against Aurora Borealis (IL), we are now scheduled to take on the Rochester River Dogz (NY) in the 3rd Qualifying Round for the Cup.
That makes the third time in three U.S. Open Cup qualifying rounds that we've been assigned an away game, all at least 400 miles distant. While other participants are playing teams typically in their same state, we've been selected to travel all over the country to places like Kansas City, Aurora, IL, and most recently, Rochester, NY. At the end of the qualifying rounds, we will have catalogued over 3,000 miles, which would have been closer to 4,000 if it weren't for an early forfeiture from an opponent in Kansas City.
We are a club that is run solely by volunteers -- players and staff alike -- with full time jobs, families, and lives that we balance with our passion for the sport and love for this club. We're regular people doing this as a labor of love because we believe in it and the greater mission. We manage to operate on a shoe-string budget through blood, sweat, tears and duct tape.
This trip alone will cost us roughly $15,000. While we've set aside some money to cover our U.S. Open Cup run, we did not anticipate three consecutive away games across the country. It takes a toll on us as a club financially, and it takes a toll on our players in the event they have to take work off for the three day trip.
The financials break down as follows:
Travel - $10,000 (20 flights @ $350 plus additional ground transportation)
Hotel - $3,000 (assuming 2 nights)
Meals - $2000 (assuming a 3 day trip)
We are responsible and reasonable with our spending, but financial assistance from our supporters and from people who just love soccer is critical to make this all happen.
