Un Aula Para Oaxaca (A Classroom for Oaxaca)

The collected money will be used to rebuild a computer classroom in Oaxaca, Mexico. In September of 2017, Mexico was shaken by a series of earthquakes, causing different damages throughout the country. In the state of Oaxaca, whole communities were affected both socially and economically. The region of the Istmo of Tehuantepec was one of the most affected areas in the state.
One of the schools that was most affected was the high school BAI Ixtaltepec. Most of its classrooms were either totally or partially damaged. Today, more than two years away from the earthquake, temporary constructions are still in use, which are not optimum and do not respond to the extreme climate conditions or to the persistent earthquake risk.
The aim of the project is also to impart courses, both theoretical and practical, focusing on the importance of the correct selection of materials and techniques. The building will be built by the community of the high school; including professors, staff, students and parents, together with a group of professionals.
This project also aims to strengthen and develop community ties in Asunción Ixtaltepec with the ideal of sharing knowledge, which will provide the necessary tools to react to further risks and opportunities in the future. Tools that will allow the construction of buildings that adequately respond to the natural and cultural context of the area.
The total cost of the project is CAD 70,000. We have already collected around 70% of the funds, so the construction has already started. However, we need to collect the rest to be able to conclude it. The funds are being managed by the PNAEE (National Board of Literacy and Educational Extension) in Mexico and your donations will go directly to them.
