UC Davis Formula Racing is an entirely student-run team focused on building a high-performance electric race car. We are a diverse group, including engineers, computer scientists, business majors, and artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, united by a passion for innovation, and of course, racing.
All design, fabrication, planning, marketing, outreach, and racing is done by our student members, and as a result, they leave the team with communication experience, the ability to effectively work in groups, time management skills, and hands-on engineering know-how. Each member is deeply invested in the team – devoting over twenty hours per week to the project is standard fare for many of us. In addition to successfully creating our car, we mature and grow both as individuals and as a group. It’s more than building race cars and friendships; we’re teaching each other to reach and succeed, as members of the team, students at UC Davis, and in our experiences beyond our academic career.
Our team is composed of three departments, Mechanical, Electrical, and Operations, all working toward a successful design cycle and a cohesive team.
Our Mechanical team is tasked with transforming ideas and designs into a complete, real-world race car in under year. From designing systems in CAD, to sourcing materials, and manufacturing custom components, as well as testing and tuning the finished vehicle. They ensure our car is powerful, agile, safe, and efficient.
Our Electrical team handles the design and construction of the systems that power, control, and monitor our car. They handle everything from simulating, designing, and fabricating custom circuits to constructing the information network that allows us to diagnose and tune our car for maximum performance in real time.
Our Operations team is responsible for keeping the team on track, funded, and working together; all of which are elements crucial to the success of such a complex organization. This team handles the PR, events, sponsorship, paperwork, finances, and meetings that allow for smooth operation and success.
This year, the team is building our fourth electric race car, FE4. In order to succeed, we need to purchase materials, components, and machine time. We predict that the total budget for FE4 is $25,000; $20,000 for parts, and $5,000 for travel to the competition in Lincoln, Nebraska. Approximately $15,000 will come from corporate sponsors, in-kind donations, and our saved resources. We hope to raise the remaining $10,000 with the help of our families and friends.
