St. Michaels Church Killavoggy Fund

The Parish Pastoral council, the Finance Committee and the Parish Priest of Killenummery/Ballintogher/Killavoggy Fr. Vincent Connaughton in consultation with the Bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnois Francis Duffy having accepted the recommendation of the Insurance Company Allianz are in agreement to replace and repair the leaking roof of St. Michael’s Church, Killavoggy, Dromahair Co. Leitrim.
The roof has been in very bad repair during the last number of years, and many leaks have developed in the roof, and the Insurance Company are no longer in a position to repair these leaks outlining that this is now a matter for the people of the parish and Fr. Vincent to resolve. There are no grants available in Ireland, and therefore we are relying on the good will of so many of our Emigrants, friends and relations both at home and abroad to help us to fundraise in order to keep our church alive, active and in good repair.
Rural life in Ireland cannot be allowed to become extinct, and our church plays a vital role in serving the people of this rural part of North Co. Leitrim.
The history of St. Michael’s Church dates back to 1883,and the then Parish Priest Canon Thomas Cahill built St. Michael’s Church on land that was donated to him by a Mr Hugh Mc Tiernan, and in 1903, the same Canon Cahill built an extension to the church. The church was completely restored and renovated by Canon Patrick J. Moran in the early 60’s. Since then very little work was carried out in the church, so much so that we now have a major problem with the roof. Fr. Vincent Connaughton, the Parish Priest is very committed to keeping this church open, and the Sunday attendance at Holy Mass is almost packed to capacity.
Earlier I referred to rural life in Ireland, and sadly many people were forced to emigrate to the U.S., Australia, Europe and they have at all times maintained to keep vital and strong links with Killavoggy and North Leitrim. Therefore, this launch is a sincere appeal to all who have a link or a connection with Killavoggy, Fr. Vincent, their friends, business people and others who may be associated with the parish of Killenummery & Killery (North Leitrim & South County Sligo), to help us on this once off fundraising event for a church that we love, admire and speaks the history of the past, so that the future worship of our Catholic and Christian faith will continue to be strong and vibrant in the years ahead.
In conclusion, and in anticipation I take this opportunity to thank all concerned for your generosity, kindness, friendship and above all your prayers so that this project will be successful in spite of the long recession that Ireland has endured during the past eight years.
The Architects are working on the costings for the roof, and will be going out to tender in the next few weeks. I will update you with figures at a later stage. A fundraising function well be held (Strictly Come Dancing) on Sunday 6th December at the Radisson Hotel, Rosses Point, Sligo. Dancing lessons for our 16 couples is now taking place. I am truly grateful for any generosity that you can afford this project for St. Michael’s Church, Killavoggy, Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.
