Keeping the homeless warm this Xmas

BikeLife TV is a UK based platform that showcases and shares its love for all things associated with bikes. We go by the mantra, "bikes build bonds" and this sentiment allows us to connect with people from all walks of life, from near and far, regardless of social background, age, gender or any other differences. Uniting all for the love of one common interest; riding bikes!

As the weather gets colder, wetter and generally more unpredictable, the presence of bikers riding on the streets of London tend to decrease and we only come out in mass for special occasions. Christmas is fast approaching, however there is a fragment of society whom are often neglected and viewed in a negative light, who do not have the luxury of choosing whether or not stay indoors during the colder winter months. We are talking about the homeless.

Most people are fortunate enough never to have to experience homelessness. But for those that do, it can be a very traumatic experience that is hard to escape from; damaging physically and emotionally along the way. Homeless people suffer high levels of stress from their lack of control over their housing situation, combined with significant poverty and poor living conditions. They often feel very isolated. To make matters worse many carry with them the distressing memories of things which they have experienced – both before and during their disturbing time spent sleeping on the streets.

Have you ever imagined how traumatic it would be living on the streets, alone? People walking past as if you don't exist.. Feeling as if you have lost all sense of identity.. You have nothing but the dirty clothes you are wearing.. Your back hurting from trying to find a comfortable position in which to rest on the hard concrete floor.. Being able to do nothing but shiver yourself to sleep because that's the only possible way to escape the fact that you are so cold.. And then waking up so hungry that it hurts?!!

Didn't think so.

Did you know that over 7,500 people slept rough on London’s streets during 2014/15? This number has more than doubled over the last five years. Half of all the rough sleepers in the UK are in London. For obvious reasons, winter is a particularly difficult season resulting in homeless people suffering three times as many physical health problems as the average person. The death rate of rough sleepers is 25 times that of the rest of the population.

At BikeLife TV we believe that strength comes in numbers and this campaign is our way of giving back to those who are less fortunate than us at a time where most people are celebrating and enjoying the festive period with their loved ones in the comfort of their own homes. As many people eat delicious food with loved ones and open presents we want to make sure some homeless people have something to eat and a gift to receive too.

This Go Fund Me campaign is aimed to raise money so that we can do just that! We would like to buy a large number of woolly hats, scarfs, gloves, sleeping bags, flasks and even sandwiches! We will then round up the riders and hit the roads in numbers to distribute the goods to the those who are sleeping rough on the streets. We know that this gesture will not resolve their situation but hopefully make them more comfortable and let them know that society hasn't abandoned them. We also plan on providing them with leaflets which detail relevant information on what their options are and how they can go about trying to get out of their current situation and into accommodation as well as work!

Some may think that this isn't much but we are strong believers of the sayings "every little helps" and "a little goes a long way”. So whether you donate as little as £2 or £20, you can go away knowing that you took part in raising money for a worthy cause this holiday season and that you contributed to helping make someone's modern day hell that little bit better!

We are extremely grateful for your help!

Thank you,
