Tyler's Fight for Sight

Donation protected
Today, I am reaching out to anyone and everyone who might be willing to help, even though I hate asking for it. As many of you may know, my son Tyler has been diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, RP for short. RP is a genetic disorder that will cause the rods and cones in his eyes to deteriorate and he will lose his sight as he gets older, possibly making him blind by adulthood.

Tyler is 11 years old and is very active with his Boy Scouts and with his brothers Cub Scouts. He knows no stranger and is wanting to help whenever and wherever he can. He is a smart, funny, and strong young man and even with this diagnoses, he is not letting it hold him back. On Halloween, it was very noticeable that he could not see much of anything at night. Sadly, with RP night vision is the first to go then peripheral vision, which he is starting to lose too.

I want to start saving money for him for when his medical needs arise, however it is hard to start saving when you fall behind on bills. There are so many things I would like to do for Tyler before he loses his sight, but as many know, money is hard to come by. Even though bills and a medical savings account are the main purpose, I believe there are other things that we may need in the future. Hopes of getting another car with lower miles that would be easy for him to get in and out of, and enough storage that IF his sight gets bad enough, he would need a guide dog.

Sadly, we live in a small trailer and I know we are out growing it already. I know we will need something bigger than what we have and what makes it worse, the sooner I can get it the better for him. He would be able to learn the house and be more prepared for when his sight does go.

Recently, we were all able to meet my father and Tyler’s grandfather, who also suffers from RP. Tyler and I got to see firsthand, what he was on the path for. Instead of getting scared, he opened up and wanted to learn and ask questions. Tyler’s doctor is in Kansas City, who has referred us to Iowa City, stating that they have one of the best centers for people who have disorders, like Tyler’s. That trip has been put on hold, as well. Despite knowing he will lose his sight, this boy has the will and determination to stay positive. I want to continue to give him hope and keep the fear away.

I have added a link about RP so if you want to learn more about what is happening to Tyler, you can learn more about RP. The goal has been set at this amount because it would help catch up on bills and put money away for Tyler’s medical needs.

I also, want to preemptively thank you, to anyone who is willing to help me and my son through the tough roads ahead.

Thank you from a scared and worried, but hopeful mom.
