SHE IS OUR SUPERHERO!!!
CANCER.
Did that get your attention? It got ours. My wife of 11 years received news no one ever expects but at her age even more so. Her primary care doctor, and her Gastroenterologist both said something to the effect of ‘at your age, this would be highly unlikely.” Guess what? We were highly unlikely. When we visited the surgeon, he told us that even though the initial biopsy of the growth in her large intestine didn’t show cancer, based on his experience and the facts in this case, he believed the growth to be malignant. Malignant. What an ugly word. She underwent some further tests and then finally the day came for the 4 hour surgery.
The surgeon came out and showed us pictures of the growth - a terribly ugly thing that we thought looked either like a muppet or a hippopotamus. He showed us how the thing had broken through the wall of the intestine, and had hardened some of the surrounding lymph nodes. He said words like chemotherapy, radiation and treatment. In that waiting room on the 2nd floor of the Roberts building, it felt like my entire world came crashing in.
My update to Facebook for all our friends and family who were praying for us read: "Surgery is through. Dr. Came out. Stage 3 cancer. Tumor had protruded the wall of colon. And into surrounding lymph nodes. Couldn't take all lymph nodes due to blood vessel connection. I'm devastated, scared and overwhelmed. God is bigger, but wow this feels huge."
And that's where we find ourselves now. Post surgery, pre treatment. A place of waiting and uncertainty. Please help us as we figure out our new normal.
We have two amazing sons. Ty - 4 years old and Judah 2 - years old. We know that the medical bills are waiting...
