Help Independent Interpreters and Translators
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We need your help Now. Independent Contract Interpreters and Translators' livelihood is in jeopardy!
For the last two months, representatives and members from the Association of Independent Judicial Interpreters of California (AIJIC), the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and other stakeholders have been working tirelessly meeting with senators' staff; paying their own way to travel to Sacramento to speak on behalf of independent interpreters and translators. A petition drive with close to 5,000 signatures was started and continues. We have been unsuccessful on our own.
We need your donation to help with our legal and lobbying efforts to better defend our position in seeking an exemption from Assembly Bill 5. The Bill has exemptions for some professions, but we are still not getting a carve-out. The recently added B2B section of the Bill still prevents us from working with companies that offer our same services unless we are their employees. We do not oppose the bill. We only want to be exempted.
Why We Need Your Donation
We maintain that interpreters and translators are professional independent contractors because we work with multiple companies, and sometimes more than one on the same day. Becoming an employee of each and everyone of them will hurt us. If this is successful in California, the rest of the country will follow suit.
Your donation will allow us to use such funds in contracting with lobbyist, advocates, and/or attorneys who will defend our position as independent contractors and all related expenses associated with this endeavor.
PLEASE DONATE AND SHARE THIS DONATION DRIVE!
