Tusc. County Educational Fund

High school students are struggling with English composition and public speaking. They are not being prepared appropriately for future success under the current educational limitations of the Common Core programming. Unfortunately, some of these students are being left behind because there is no funding in place to supplement instruction or tutoring. Although the situation is nationwide, the problem is robustly concernable in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

To combat the problem, an academic learning center is being proposed. The center would have two goals: 1) to provide FREE services to its clients and 2) to provide services that lead to higher-education opportunities.

With these goals in mind, the center will offer FREE services in English tutoring and instruction while simultaneously mentoring low-SES and low-achieving high school students who need support in obtaining a college education.

Tutoring and instruction:
College Composition
Public Speaking
Advanced Vocabulary
English as a Second Language (ESL)
University Study Skills
College Entrance Exam Preparation (ACT, SAT, GRE)

College Mentoring Program:
Searching for Colleges
Helping with Application Process
Aiding in Personal Statements
Supporting Newly Admitted College Students

The learning center is being spear-headed by Brenda Lee Stephens, an English and ESL professional of 9 years who has experience in both secondary and post-secondary education. She has a BA in Art History (summa cum laude) and an M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction, and is studying for her PhD in Education. Currently, Miss Stephens is an Adjunct at Columbus State Community College, where she teaches bridging students Intro to College Composition and Public Speaking.

Funds generated from this campaign will go toward:
-- Rental of office space large enough to hold classes of 10 students, with at least 3 private tutoring rooms
-- Office equipment, such as desks, tables, chairs, whiteboard, binders, filing cabnets, pens/pencils, clipboards
   -- 10 laptops for 21st-century educational instruction
   -- Teacher/tutor stipends
-- Classroom textbooks, software, and printing
-- Curriculum development and Reader publication

Implementation of the learning center is a three-fold venture. The schedule for implementing stage 1 of the learning center is Summer 2017. This would mean locating a rental space and establishing the learning center's presence in the community. Doors to the center would open June 1st, 2017. Stage 2 would begin in September 2017, when the new school year starts. The center Director, Miss Stephens, would begin working with the area schools to connect center services to at-risk students. In stage 3, the center would expand to offer online services through virtual classrooms and Skype consultation. Online service would begin in January 2018. With this in mind, fundraising is crucial and needed immediately.

Your help and support is highly appreciated and recognized as an honorable contribution for the assurance of equality and equity in education. Every donation contributes to the success of a child in need. Without your kindness and generosity, the learning center would never be able to aid the next generation of brilliant minds. For this, you have the utmost graditude of the center director, as well as each and every person that the center helps.

Imagine knowing that a child was able to get help, go to college, and change their life course... all through YOUR donation. Now that's a beautiful picture, and a gift that will remain precious for the duration of time.
