A dear childhood friend, Marika Melnyk (Goszewski) has maintained the utmost strength and privacy in a battle as a single mother to fight for her daughters survival for many years.  All of which she has triumphed through with a smile as a trooper!

In a time of desperation, we are sharing their story with you in hope that some stress may be alleviated during this most critical stage in their lives. As a young child, Marika underwent heart surgery herself. She was able to enjoy a life without further complications, met the great love of her life when she was young and shortly after Sommer was born, he passed away from a malignant melanoma which spread to his brain. Marika, despite her grief, continued to be strong for Sommer who underwent her first open heart surgery before the age of two after being born with a congenital heart defect.

Marika continued her strength for herself and now 2 daughters. Focused on Sommers well-being, they kept good spirits and faith that things will all work out. Sommer is now 22 years old and has had 5 open heart surgeries, 3 pacemakers, numerous heart catheters, and prosthetics placed in her heart. In November of 2017, Sommer went into heart failure again and now multiple organ failure.  With God’s hand and Sommers continuous strength,  she was able to come home in January of 2018 and begin testing for a heart transplant. The past 2 weeks Sommer has been at U of M due to a rapid decline caused from her heart and organ failures. All while mom attempts to maintain her career and pay the bills an hour and a half away from where her daughter is being hospitalized.  Sommer is now in critical condition, requiring a triple organ transplant (heart, kidney and liver). There is nothing more U of M is able to help her with. Due to complexity of surgeries required, Sommer must now be transferred to Cleveland, Ohio where Marika will accompany her daughter for an unknown amount of time. We are asking that you find it in your heart to assist in this most desperate time of need to help a mother help her child in her survival.

It is with deepest sorrow and grief that I share with you that Sommer took her last breaths at 1:29pm. She was surrounded by family listening to stories and her last moments were peaceful...I can't begin to thank each of you for your prayers, thoughts, kind words and your support. Without your support I would have not been able to spend these last few months by her side. Please know that I am eternally grateful.

Dear Friends and Family,

After fighting (and stuggling) for over a year to overcome her health challenges, Sommer has decided it is time rest and wants to enjoy the remainder of the time she has left surrounded with family, friends, and loved ones. On January 2nd, she signed herself onto Heart to Heart Hospice, a wonderful company I work for. Her Hospice Rn, Melisa, has already went above and beyond to make one of Sommer's wishes come true. I am Blessed to have such an amazing work family.
As Sommer faces her own mortality, she does it with such resiliency. Her bravery, courage, and strength is truly amazing. As a family, she is teaching us what is important in life. We celebrate her now, give God our gratitude for the limited time we share with eachother. It is so heartwarming to see my daughters, smiling and laughing together
We want to thank all of you for your support, thoughts and prayers. You have lifted us up, given us strength, (and most importantly) an opportunity to be together this past year. It is a kindness we have been blessed with, and no words can describe how truly gratful we are for all of you.

Sincerely,
Marika, Sommer, and Ava

Thank you to all for your continued support and prayers for Sommer and her family. Today Sommer was relocated to Henry Ford Detroit for evaluation by the Heart Failure team. As of right now, Sommer will continue dialysis and palliative care at Henry Ford as the Doctors and family desperately continue to search for specialists that will brave the battle with her. Your support has allowed her mother, Marika, to remain by Sommer’s side during this fragile state. Sommer remains emotionally strong and determined to win this battle against all odds. Please keep sharing her story as the search for Doctors continues. Your prayers are needed more than ever at this time. Thank you.
