Tre’s Fearless Fight

For those of you who don’t know Tre as well as we do, here’s a little glimpse of who he is. Tre is an extraordinary 7 yrs old boy, full of laughter and energy. He is extremely witty, clever and charming; he calls himself an evil genius because of his love of villains. He loves music, dancing, basketball, swimming, watching TV, playing with legos and hot wheel cars. He truly enjoys making friends everywhere he goes and is not shy about it.  Unfortunately our little man has been dealt a bad hand in life but he is resilient and determined to live his best life!

On December 10, 2018 our son was admitted into the hospital after having 4 days of terrible headaches. Headaches that would not subside with pain medication and were causing him to throw-up. After tests and multiple scans, our worst fears were confirmed. We were told he had a mass in his head and blockage that was causing liquid build up in his brain. The mass, plus the excess liquid was pushing his brain forward and that pressure was causing the terrible headaches our little boy had to endure.

On December 14th, 2018, he underwent surgery to take care of the liquid in his brain (hydrocephalus) by having a tube (shunt) placed from his brain into his abdomen. Based on the medical opinion of his doctor, it looks like he will have this tube (shunt) inside of him for years to come. Also, on that day they did a biopsy of the mass and confirmed it to be a craniopharyngioma which is a growing benign tumor that hardens and gets stuck to areas of the brain. Fortunately, Tre bounced back from this surgery like a champ and was back in school within weeks!

I’m sad to say the doctors believe our little boy may have been born with this tumor due to the size of it. The tumor has apparently had various years to grow and calcify.  Scans show the tumor to be close to or possibly stuck to some delicate areas. His pituitary gland has been taken over by the tumor which means Tre will most likely lose pituitary function and will have to take medication/ hormones for the rest of his life. His optic nerves seem to also be affected which means his peripheral vision is slowly deteriorating. Tumor is also very close to his brain stem and hypothalamus. Needless to say, our little boy is dealing with a very delicate situation.

Tre will be undergoing a second surgery on February 6th, 2019 to attempt to remove as much of the tumor as possible. As you can imagine, based on everything previously stated, this will not be an uncomplicated surgery. Luckily, there is a team of awesome doctors working together to do the best they can in removing the tumor and trying to maintain his quality of life. Regardless, we’ve been told it is unlikely that the entire tumor will be removed due it’s location and what it possibly can be stuck to. Of course they don’t really know what they will actually get until they go in and see what they can do. It’s not the greatest thing you want to hear but we are hopeful that the doctors will be doing everything they can and our little man will come out of surgery with minimal damage.

We won’t know definitively what the next course of action will be until after Tre’s second surgery but we have been given some possibilities. He will most likely have to undergo radiation afterwards but the doctors are hopeful they will able to remove enough of the tumor to postpone the immediate need. There was even conversation about multiple surgeries but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Even if all goes perfectly with the surgery, we already know that Tre will have to continue having scans and doctor visits for the next 5-10 yrs and we are getting ready for the long run. Tre has been truly inspirational throughout this entire process and we know this is just a bump in the road for him. He will continue to be our spunky, humorous and bright Tre we all know and love.

With all this being said, the cost of these surgeries is by no means inexpensive and we will continue to incur medical cost for a few years; wether it’s further scans, doctor visits, medication, radiation, etc. We really are not the ones to ask for help but we have had so many friends and family members who have reached out to us about wanting to help out. I hate to be cliche but financial assistance is really the only thing we could use at the moment. So if you wish to help out, you can donate money to go towards Tre’s medical expenses. Every dollar makes a difference in our lives. We don’t want anyone to feel obligated to donate but we do ask all of our friends and family to send Tre their well wishes, prayers and positive vibes. We can definitely use those as we get ready for round two of surgery.

We are extremely positive and hopeful of the process but this is by no means easy on him or his family. We will continue to update everyone as we continue on this journey. We really appreciate all of the love and support everyone has given and continue to give. Thank you from the bottom of our heart!  ❤️
