Two Women Runners Dreaming the Impossible:

Running for a Cure and Raising Awareness for Leukemia and Childhood Cancer

Margaret and Randi are two friends not only connected by the miles they run together but their hearts to do good for others. We have teamed up to run the Trans Rockies Run in Colorado in 2019 (6 days , 120 miles, 20,000 ft of elevation gain) to bring awareness to childhood cancer.  Our efforts are inspired by a young fighter, Connor McGoff.

Connor has a genetic disorder called Noonan’s Syndrome which puts him at risk for developing leukemia. Margaret met Connor in 2011 when he was just 18 months old and had been diagnosed for the first time with leukemia. When she came to visit him in the hospital as he underwent chemotherapy for the first time to consult on feeding progress, he always wanted to do laps in the hallways! He did this despite the fact that he was fatigued, nauseous from chemotherapy, with a low immune system. Margaret has run since she was 13 years old, and Connor's passion for the activity at such a young age inspired her and made her feel grateful for her ability to go out and run the trails whenever. At the 2013 Pikes Peak marathon Margaret wore a photo of Connor on her race bib, and she was so inspired as she ran. After the finish, her boyfriend proposed to her at the top. So in a way, Connor was there for a pivotal moment. It was only fitting that he be the ring bearer at her wedding in 2014.  Connor underwent a bone marrow transplant in August of 2017 after his second relapse of leukemia. On July 17 of 2018, just two short weeks before the one year anniversary of his bone marrow transplant, Connor’s leukemia relapsed for the third time. He briefly went into remission for four weeks while awaiting Cart T-cells, but as he awaited the cells, he relapsed a fourth time. Years of chemotherapy have begun to impact his nervous system making standing painful at times, his endurance for activity is compromised from all of the medical treatments he has undergone. He can only stand for short periods of time before becoming fatigued and expressing pain. With his fourth relapse of leukemia he is undergoing yet another round of chemotherapy and is awaiting cutting edge treatment of Cart-T cells, which will require all of the numbers falling into place.

Each year about 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer, and it is the number one cause of childhood death in the United States. We want to raise awareness of this in any way we can. The run will be a test for us for sure, but nothing compared to Connor’s struggle. Though Connor is hooked up to a machine to receive chemo, IVs, for medications, a gastrostomy tube for feedings to meet his nutritional needs, and monitors; he still smiles and wants to race around the hallways—though now he has to do it on a tricycle.

We would be so grateful if you could help us, financially, get to the Trans Rockies Race, so we can continue to bring light and fight for children out there who deserve to be able to run as well.

These funds will be going toward the race fees as well as crew members to support Margaret and Randi on their trek across the Colorado mountains.
