Transpennine Trail for Dementia
Tax deductible
In April, my father and I will be embarking on a long slog on our bikes bisecting the UK in half. We will be cycling from Southport to Hull in the space of five days to mark my 21st year and to raise money for Alzheimer's society.
Alzheimer's society is a charity which funds pioneering research into all forms of Alzheimer's and dementia, and provides support to those affected and their families.
I'm sure many of you reading this will have, at some point, been affected by this illness as there are currently 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, set to rise to 1 million in 2025.
My family was personally affected by this illness when my grandpa was diagnosed in 2008. My grandpa was one of the kindest, gentlest people I have ever know. He had a great love of musical theatre and technical capabilities beyond my comprehension (even as an engineering student) and it was hard to watch him struggle with something that made him less himself. Some days are harder than others and charities that support those affected by Alzheimers provide necessary relief when it is a particularly hard day.
It is for this reason that myself and my father are subjecting ourselves to days of saddle sore and aching muscles in the hopes of giving back to those who were there for our family at a difficult time.
