Operation for a trans person

Donation protected

Dear all

I would like to thank all who have contributed already. I don't have words to say how appreciated this is and how deeply grateful I am.

As most of you know, I am married to a transperson. Her deepest dream is to have surgery and become a woman. I watched, for more than a decade, as she struggled with her fear of coming out. Society is not necessarily gentle with trans people.

And finally she won her battle, and managed to make the leap out of the closet, and show her true self as a woman.

The transformation was beautiful to watch. Previously I was married to a kind of melancholy man, always dressed in black. Now my spouse is colourful and smiling, and her laugh comes easily. The unfolding of this aspect of her has deepened the love between us. I am in awe of her courage and I love who she has become.

However, the other night she came home, sad and upset. Norway really does have some highly progressive legislation concerning trans people. If you want to change your legal sex – the one on documents, in your passport and so on – this is done easily. Thank goodness. And there are other things that are very good. However, there is one aspect that leaves a lot to be desired, which is the clinical aspect of it.

I do love living in Norway, and in general our health system is very good. But there are some groups of patients that are not treated kindly. One of those groups is trans people. I will not go deeply into the details, but there is just one health facility in Norway that has the mandate to grant surgery for trans people. And Rikshospitalet has a policy on the field that has been strongly criticized in media and other places, this is just one of the links on the topic:

So she comes home with a broken heart, after a meeting at the hospital. She still doesn't know if they will grant surgery. And if they do grant it, the wait will be a long one. She might be 50 already before they'll perform the surgery on her. I am devastated on her behalf. It feels so deeply unfair. I have watched the struggle within her – and then when she finally comes out, her biggest challenge is the health care system! It is humiliating, frustrating and degrading in so many ways. I find the treatment very shameful.

We are currently not in a financial position to have surgery done privately. But it is now dawning on us that this is what she needs. Because the current waiting is excruciating on an emotional level. So I am asking you for help. I have never asked this much of anybody before (and part of me feels like I should be apologizing already), but I feel I must give it a try. Can  you help me raise money for a private operation? We are going to need at least 100 000 kroner. So if you can donate a small sum and spread the word, then maybe we can make her dream come true. Please share!

I haven't told her about my fundraiser. Can we please keep it a secret? I am hoping to give her the surprise of her life, maybe for Christmas.

I also realise that I will need more than my own network tp raise this sum, so please share with your friends. (But please use the function on facebook that excludes Katja, so we can keep it secret)

Thank you so much for your support. My love to you all!
