Transcend North Iowa

In January of 2017, we were two parents in rural Iowa looking into nearby resources for our transgender son. Our search found very few local resources, and only a few statewide. Instead of accepting that there just weren't many resources available, we decided to create our own - Transcend North Iowa. It started as a simple support group meeting for transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming individuals in Charles City every few weeks. It has received so much interest and support that we have expanded into Mason City and are planning a second expansion soon.
We have come to realize that transgender resources in Iowa are severely limited, and we want to expand not just our reach, but our impact. We have several projects in the works, many of which are only a few steps away from completion - a Clothing Closet, an art show featuring transgender artists, transgender sensitivity training for local law enforcement, and more. Up until now, everything we've done has been achieved with the help of volunteers and all expenses have been paid out-of-pocket.
However, there is only so much we can do. All donations will go toward funding Transcend North Iowa projects that support and advocate for the transgender community:
- $250 will go toward the fee associated with becoming a federal non-profit organization, which will in turn allow us to apply for more grants
- $150 will go toward the required sponsorship fee for showing a collection at the local art center, so that we can feature transgender artists from Iowa
- $300 will go toward stocking hard-to-find items for the Clothing Closet, such as sizes that may not often be donated, toiletries, and specific transgender accessories like chest binders
- $200 will go toward transportation fees associated with helping anyone who is unable to attend meetings - this may include gas, bus fare, etc.
- $100 will go toward the set-up costs for law enforcement training
